QUES - Having had a brief look at the Aboriginal World View (Week 2) and the history of race relations in Australia (Week 3), what do you make of the current debate around the constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians or the signing of treaty?

1) The Australian Human Rights Commission claims that the Australia constitution makes no mention of Indigenous people or their rights. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face discrimination and disadvantage on a daily basis, with no constitutional recognition or treaty in place to allow aboriginal people to stand up and have a voice. The Mabo lecture stated that Aboriginal people's voices should be heard and their rights should be recognized by the constitution. The Uluru statement from the heart is a major call to empowerment that recognizes indigenous Australians as the traditional custodians of the land. The government's response to the Uluru statement and proposal was extremely disappointing and embarrassing, as it was not "desirable or capable of winning acceptance in a referendum." I believe that the time has come for the Australian constitution to reflect Australian identity and acknowledge the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

2) I read the few articles about the Aboriginal and Torres State Islander people and they are recognized as a first persons in this nation but they had to fight a lot for their rights and still they are fighting to maintain it. they are still fighting for their culture, recognition, values, land and heritage. Also, the life expectancy of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians is different due to inequity in health care services and education.Indigenous people have been recognized as original Australians. They achieved big milestones to get a constitution as a Native. This is evident from  sheer efforts made by  their ancestors to achieve the Uluru statement( Australian Human Right Commission, 2017). They wanted to know about their culture and ancestors with greater feel of acceptance. Hence, they must have their political representation in constitutional assemblies for acceptance and approval of their decision. Therefore, it is essential to advocate the rights and decisions of Indigenous people and their families.

3) From this week’s reading, I learned Aboriginal and Torres Islander people were the First people of this land, but they are hardly mentioned in the constitution of the Australia which is the legal document. It is very sad to see that Aboriginal and Torres islander people are still treated with inequity and being discriminated in health sector.  There should be made changes in constitution to achieve equality, justice, and their voice to be heard.  As hinted by the Australian Human Rights Commission (2017), the views of the indigenous Peoples have been neglected for a very long time within political systems and other institutions offering them a voice in the issues relating to their lives, communities, and futures. But I hope the continued push and efforts for the reforms will ensure justice and equality for All first nations and Australian people.

1)The Aboriginal and Torres state islander people lived through the colonization period and went through the trauma such as racism, massacre etc. Which impacted their life negatively and as a result the stolen generation face many health related issues such as poor mental health, sexual abuse. The trauma was a result of the colonization's and violence, and was passed onto generation to generation (Australians Together, 2020). When Kevin Rudd held the apology to these people, he was apologizing not just for the actions, but was also for the policies written by the Government that forced child removal, assimilation of the Indigenous people, and the generational trauma’s that was created (National Museum Australia, 2020).  On reflection,  I believe that the apology was important to open up and acknowledge the wrong that was done to the Indigenous people, and how to open up opportunities to make it a better world for them. This apology changed a lot in Indigenous people life.
