The Austro-Asian Times is an online news site focusing on news for Northern Australia and Southeast Asia. For many years they have directly edited their static site with tools such as Dream Weaver on a daily basis. The business is expanding and they now have several international journalists and an editor. The company now wants to modernise the operation with a database-backed web application.

They have investigated WordPress, Facebook and other alternatives, but have decided to go for the a bespoke application. A custom lightweight application framework is preferred. At this stage they are after a proof-of-concept based on a functional prototype. They are only interested in the functionality, and will employ usability, graphics and content experts later (although any assistance you provide is certainly appreciated). The company does not have sufficient budget for proprietary solutions so are keen for the developer(s) to use common open-source tools to build the prototype.

They would like the following basic components to be included in the functional prototype:

1. Individual journalists should be able to log in and post news articles.

2. The top five articles based on the time they were created or last updated to automatically appear on the site’s ‘front page’. The most recent articles are listed at the top.

OPTION 2
A small Darwin art company is going online. They are currently using a static site to sell artworks. They would like for their customers to be able to order items online, and for the site to be managed via a database-driven backend. At this stage the company does not wish to utilise PayPal or similar agencies to process payments.
They prefer an email with the order sent to a specific address. They have requested the following be developed as a functional prototype, and at this stage graphics and associated designs are not required.
1. Allow people to select and buy the artist’s work from the web site using a shopping cart
2. When the shopping session is complete and the buyer submits the order and a purchase order will be stored in an ‘orders’ table.
3. A copy of each purchase order detailing the following should be sent to the buyers email address:
i. the individual selected items,
ii. each item’s cost,
iii. a total,
iv. the users delivery address

4. A copy of each purchase should be sent to an email address for handling. The email addresses may be simulated or implemented.
5. The Business Rules are outlined as follows:
i. Customer is always identified by email address.
ii. Only one phone number is held for a customer.
iii. Customer can make many purchases and a purchase generally will contain more than one product.
