a)Try to think of two (2) types of people that you may feel awkward/uncomfortable around? There can be many reasons why we might feel awkward around people in health care setting. You might not be accustomed to being around certain groups of people, or you may even have grown up in a family/school/community that brought you into conflict with people who were different in some way. Remember that there are many areas of life where differences can be expressed. You may want to
spend some time thinking about how those differences have made you feel uncomfortable in the past. Sometimes it is difficult to identify assumptions because we think of them as true, or pay little attention to the way we think. This may not be an easy task, but it can be valuable to identify preconceptions that you didn’t realise you had.

Read the case studies provided here. Identify what kind of discrimination is occurring and name the Act/s involved in the case.

a) Robyn worked as a nurse for a well-known Hospital. She did not receive the same benefits as her male colleagues such as a fuel card or mobile phone. When she drew attention to this she was demoted to a lower position and was told that the male co-workers disliked taking orders from a woman so she was ineffective.

Act/s:

b) By the time Maria had turned 22, she had completed her Bachelor of Nursing and enjoyed her position as a head nurse. She had to change jobs when she moved cities, so she started working as a Level 1 nurse. After 1 year into her job, the head nurse retired and she applied for the position that was now available. The position was given to her 31 years old colleague, Adam, who had been working at the facility for hardly three months and had no formal qualification. When she questioned the owner about his decision to give Adam the position, the owner said he thought Adam was more suited to the position because of his maturity.

c) During his meal break, Henry overheard a laughing in the staff lunch room and a loud conversation between three of his fellow workers. They were making derogatory and racist comments about an Indigenous Australian female athlete. With an Indigenous Australian background himself, Henry felt personally offended and insulted. He lodged a complaint to his employer against the three fellow workers. After the complaint, his employer moved him to a different location so he would feel more
‘comfortable’ with the work environment. Shortly after he arrived the position to which he was moved became redundant and the employer would not find him an alternative position.

d) Boris has worked in customer service in healthcare Centre for the past ten years. Recently he applied for a job in telemarketing in which he was by far the most experienced candidate. During the interview, Boris mentioned that he was 90% blind. The manager kindly said that it would be impossible to accommodate somebody like Boris and wished him good luck in finding another suitable position.

Q10. You are an Enrolled Nurse for a North Melbourne Clinic.
