Case Scenario 1
You are transporting an elderly gentleman (James, 76 years) who is a low acuity patient and is quite frail.
You are taking him from his aged care residential facility to his hearing appointment at the audiologist.
James is making the journey unaccompanied.
His journey is from one inner city suburb to another and the distance is 15 kms. James usually uses a wheel chair for ambulation, but he can transfer to a passenger seat in the car.
During the pre-journey check of the vehicle you identify that the seat belt buckle (clasp) does not engage. In fact, it engaged only 3 times out of 5 tries.
You begin the journey with James to the scheduled appointment and you find that the traffic is quite heavy, and the weather is inclement, and a heavy rain begin to fall.
During the journey you come across a police officer directing cars to detour due to a car accident at an intersection in front of you.
You now believe you will be approximately 20 minutes late to the appointment.
As the journey length increases, James begins to feel a little anxious and uncomfortable
You notice in the rear-view mirror that he is looking a little pale.
You ask James ‘how he is going’ and he complains of some chest pain and shortness of breath.
You check the GPS and you notice that a major public hospital is only 8 kms from your position but it is hard to estimate how long it will take to get there.
Fortunately, the police officer (at the traffic incident) sees your vehicle and comes over to investigate your circumstance and he then calls an ambulance for James.
The ambulance arrives, and the ambulance officer asks you what has happened.
Case Scenario 2
Your patient transport vehicle/ambulance has been out all night after a busy night shift. The outgoing night shift crew inform you that they have had a busy night and that the consumables in the vehicle are running low.
They have not had a chance to re-stock.
You are given a verbal list of what they think is missing.
As this is your vehicle for your upcoming day shift, you complete the mandatory vehicle checklist.
You notice that the radiator warning light comes on and the tyres seem a bit low on air.
Questions for Case Scenario 2
11. What communication techniques and documents will you use to confirm that you have understood the report on the stock levels from the outgoing crew? (20-50 words or dot point responses)
12. After you have completed the vehicle checklist and identified the issues, what is your next step to rectify? (dot points acceptable)
13. Access and research the Australian infection Control Framework to assist in your responses.
14. Discuss the implications of using a vehicle which is not only dirty, but insufficiently stocked. For example, list the repercussions of not carrying the following:
