Students are required to read and understand the assessment requirements before undertaking assessment activities.
Section 1: Unit details
About the unit This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide nursing care to a person with diabetes including assessing needs, planning and implementing complex nursing interventions, evaluating outcomes, and educating the person on his/her condition and available resources.
This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia regulatory authority legislative requirements.

Relevant Legislation The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
Section 2: Assessment Conditions
Performance evidence You must show evidence of the ability to manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:
undertaken nursing work in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia professional practice standards, codes and guidelines
provided nursing care and management of 2 people with diabetes in the workplace including:
a person who has become hypoglycaemic
a person who has become hyperglycaemic
a person who is demonstrating signs of ketoacidosis.
Knowledge evidence To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must demonstrate knowledge of:

anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology related to diabetes and diabetic conditions including:
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes
gestational diabetes mellitus
potential problems related to care of a person with diabetes and the following conditions – with the knowledge sufficiently in-depth and specialised to make considered judgements:
hypoglycaemia
hyperglycaemia
ketoacidosis
hyper osmolar non-ketonic coma
retinopathy
infection
psychosocial issues
microvascular and macrovascular disease
health promotion goals and their expected outcomes including:
exercise
diabetic diet
weight loss (body mass index or waist to hip ratio)
smoking cessation
foot and eye care
factors influencing self esteem of the person with diabetes
issues related to diabetes care delivery and diabetes-related services
underlying environmental and social factors contributing to diabetes in the Australian general population, including the factors involved with higher rates experienced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
Assessment resources and conditions All relevant assessment resources such as policies, templates, website links, articles and observation tools/checklists are made available on LEO separately or incorporated in the Assessment Pack itself.
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment as specified in the performance evidence. The following conditions must be met for this unit:
use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources in line with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council’s Standards including:
glucometer
progressive notes of a de-identified person’s medical history
organisation policy and procedures on which the candidate bases the planning
modelling of industry operating conditions including access to real people for simulations and scenarios in enrolled nursing work.
Assessment methods ACU College ensures that the assessments are conducted in a fair, flexible, valid and reliable manner. The following assessment methods have been designed to include the skills and knowledge evidence and the performance criteria of the unit of competency.
You must attempt to answer all questions/tasks, complete demonstrations, role plays and workplace observations/performances in order to demonstrate competency in this unit.
Assessment Tasks:
Assessment 1: Online quiz (LEO)
This assessment requires computer use. You will need to answer all questions (these include multiple choice). You must obtain 100% mastery and you will have the opportunity for two attempts. You will be notified of the due date for this assessment on Day 1 of this unit.
Assessment 2: Case study
This assessment has two case scenarios, Nellie and Jack. You will be required to provide nursing care and management of these two diabetic clients Nellie and Jack, including promoting their self-management skills. You will be expected to provide nursing care to Nellie as she becomes both hypoglycaemic and hyperglcaemic and Jack, who is demonstrating signs of ketoacidosis.
To achieve competency in this unit, you are required to attempt ALL the questions, and answer them in full in order to obtain a Satisfactory outcome. You will be notified of the due date for this assessment on Day 1 of this unit.
Assessment 3: Research Essay
You are required to research one of the three following statements below that relate to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and in the context of the ‘Assessment Requirements’ below:
Exercise alone is a sufficient means of control for Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes can be controlled well with a health balanced diet.
Type 2 Diabetes can be tightly controlled with a combination of a healthy diet and daily moderate exercise.
You are required to write a 500-800-word essay on your chosen statement above.
Ensure you include each of the areas listed within the “Assessment Requirements” grid when you write your essay.
To support the statement you have chosen, you will need to find 2-4 research articles to upload with your research essay.
The outcome of this assessment will be Satisfactory (S) or Not Yet Satisfactory (NYS).
You will need fully reference the research articles you choose using APA Referencing Style - see link on ACU Library website: https://leo.acu.edu.au/mod/book/view.php?id=1030664&chapterid=21101You are required to provide APA referencing WITHIN the body of your essay, including a REFERENCE LIST at the end of your essay.
Assessment 4: Clinical skills on Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
You will be required to demonstrate the ability to provide nursing care and management of two people with diabetes in the workplace, including care for a person who has become hypoglycaemic, hyperglycaemic and is showing signs of ketoacidosis.
PEPs are an integral part of the course. On successful completion of the theory component you will be awarded a satisfactory outcome for the assessment/exam. You will not be deemed competent in the unit until you have satisfactorily completed all the required PEP(s).
Timings and Submission of Assessment/Exam All the assessments are due two weeks after the last day of the scheduled class.
All tasks must be completed by using the Assessment Pack template. Please note that you can add additional space to the assessment template, but you cannot:
remove any sections of the template; or
change the numbering of sections/questions; or
submit your assessment without using the template.
Assessments submitted in the wrong format/template will not be marked and you will be required to resubmit the assessment using the appropriate template. Please not that this will be considered a second attempt.
Assessment submission links on LEO will close once the due date has been reached.
Due dates may be adjusted given the circumstance and you will be notified by your trainer/assessor of this via LEO.
If you need more than the two weeks to submit your assessment, you must complete the D-ST006 Student Assessment Extension and Special Consideration Request Form a minimum of 48 hours before the due date and have it approved by your Trainer/Course Coordinator.
Assessments submitted after the due date without extension approval are considered a second attempt.
The assessments must be submitted via the correct upload link on LEO.
Assessments may be checked by trainers for academic integrity and honesty through using the Turnitin system.
Submissions through Turnitin allows you to submit draft assessment multiple times before the due date in order to further assist your writing, referencing and critical thinking skills.
The evidence submitted by you must be valid, current, sufficient and authentic, if not you will be required to provide more evidence or re-submit the assessment tasks. Attendance requirements You are required to attend at least 80% of the scheduled classes, 100% of all clinical skills activities (demonstrations and assessments) and 100% of all PEPs.
Online Quiz You must obtain a 100% result in the Online Quiz to be deemed competent in this unit. You have the opportunity for multiple attempts at the quiz up until the due date.
There will be no opportunities for further attempts after the due date.
Reasonable adjustments If you have any special requirements, please discuss them with your Trainer/Assessor or book an appointment with your Course Coordinator for a confidential discussion. Based on your requirements the following reasonable adjustments may be made:
Breaking the assessment into appropriate components that can be undertaken separately or giving additional time to complete the tasks
Allowing alternative methods of competence demonstration, such as oral assessment or third?party evidence, if allowable within the parameters of the Unit of Competency.
Results, feedback and appeal
Assessment results are made available on LEO after the “Post-date” which is three weeks after the due date.
Please take note of the “Post-dates” and check your results on LEO. You may also receive notifications about the availability of results via LEO.
You will be provided with feedback on your assessment document.
If you are deemed Not Yet Satisfactory (NYS)/ Did Not Submit (DNS) on your first submission attempt, you will be allowed one additional attempt to prove a Satisfactory outcome.
Resubmissions must be submitted within a week from the date of the results availability.
If you are deemed Not Yet Satisfactory (NYS)/ Did Not Submit (DNS) on your second submission attempt, you will not be allowed any other additional attempts to prove a Satisfactory outcome.
If you are deemed overall Not Yet Competent (NYC) for this unit(s), then you will need to re-enrol in this unit(s) again. There may be a cost associated with this. All assessment tasks will need to be repeated.
In order to be deemed Competent (C) in this unit(s) all assessment tasks need to have a Satisfactory (S) outcome.
If you do not agree with the outcome of your results, you can appeal to have your outcome reviewed and moderated by another Trainer/Assessor as per the Student Appeals Policy POL28 which is available on LEO.
