Emily is married to John (36) and they have 2 children Jessica (8) and Paula (5), they live on the far north coast of NSW. HLTH101 Alison is married to Paul (35) and they have 2 children, Blake (5) and Sarah (3), they reside in the northwest suburbs of Sydney. HLTH101 Paul’s family is made up of his parents Jan (68) and Peter (70) as well as a sibling Rachel (45). Rachel is married to Adam (40). Rachel had one child (Brittany aged 25) prior to her marriage to Adam. Brittany has 2 children Kyra (5) and James (4) though she does not have a relationship with their father. Rachel and Adam have 3 children, Cooper (12), Kylie (10) and Jessica (8). Emily is against vaccination of her children as family links Edward’s Autism to his vaccination. Alison is not against vaccination however due to allergies and compromised immune system her daughter Sarah is unable to be vaccinated. Blake has had his vaccinations. Joan and Eric utilised Facilitated Communication with Edward and have the belief that is does allow communication with Edward, along with sight cards picture stories. HLTH101 Adam has involved in a bicycle accident and sustained a severe acquired brain injury 3 years previously and has severe communication and mobility difficulties. Brittany’s 2 children have developmental delays and she relies upon Rachel for a lot of support and assistance with the children. HLTH101 Scenario Vaccination. HLTH101 You are a health care professional supporting Alison and Paul who have been having difficulty in coping with the stress involved in caring for Sarah as a result of her compromised immune system and frequent illnesses. Alison has a major concern over Sarah contracting measles and/or whooping cough. She is at a stage of asking that Emily and John and their children have no contact with her children as they have not been immunised. Alison reported that Emily is against vaccination as she believes that it caused Edward’s autism, as a result she has refused to have her children vaccinated. Alison has asked you for information that she could use to help her persuade Emily to have her children vaccinated to help protect Sarah from those illnesses covered by vaccination. Scenario Facilitated Communication. HLTH101 Paul had been discussing some of the problems his sister has been having as they are impacting himself and Alison. Rachel is more and more looking to Paul for support since Adam has had his accident. Paul was interested in facilitated communication as he has been involved with Edward, however, he has strong doubts about whether it really works. He would like a better understanding of facilitated communication as it may help communication with Adam following his injury and also with communicating with his grandniece Kyra. He feels that having a better understanding of facilitated communication and other supported communication methods he would be able to support Rachel more effectively. He has asked you to provide some information on the effectiveness of facilitated communication and if not effective what another type of augmented communication tools might assist.
