Highlights
Background
Blood [La] analysis is used widely in sports physiology and is also an important clinical measure. The La analysis can occur at clinical point of care (bed side hospital), in the laboratory (sport and clinical) and in the field e.g. trackside or pool side in the monitoring training.
It is important that the measurement process results in data that is accurate, precise, and reliable. Expensive Benchtop laboratory analysers such as the ABL, YSI and Analox are considered to be the ‘gold standards’ or give the ‘true value’ for [La] however they are not useful in the field where results are often required on the spot to adjust training variables. Portable analysers such as the Acusport, Acutrend, Lactate Scout, Lactate Pro etc allow for such immediate feedback on [La] in the field however differences in the analyser methodology for these systems, compared to Bench top analysers, can influence the validity, accuracy, precision and reliability of the data.
In this practical class you will be collecting data to so that you can write a laboratory report on: The effect of Isometric Muscle Contraction during a wall squat exercise on blood Lactate Concentration.
Class Activity
The class will start with the Academic Staff demonstrating all the required processes with WH&S compliance. There are videos in the folder so that you can be aware of these tasks before you arrive.
Determine/Measure and record the following variables that are routinely recorded for all research in Sport and Exercise Science and reported in publications.
Do your data collection as follows:
1 minute of seated rest.
2. Obtain and analyse for La resting blood sample, record result/
3. minutes of static (Isometric) wall squat (sit), if your subject cannot hold the required position for 5 minutes record the duration that they do hold the position, See Appendix.
4. minute of Seated rest
5. Obtain and analyse La post exercise blood sample, and record result.
