Task: End of Term Policy Analysis The end of term Policy Analysis is designed to allow you to explore the social determinants of health (SDH) in greater depth using an intersectional lens. In doing so, you will synthesize and consolidate your understanding of the social determinants of health and the theories that inform that understanding. You will also synthesize and consolidate your understanding of anti-oppressive research and action. 1. The Policy Analysis Proposal (5% of final grade) is due by 11:59 PM on March 12th to the HLTH 260 LEARN drop box. 2. The Final Policy Analysis (25% of final grade) is held in place of a final examination, and is due by 4PM on April 9th to the HLTH 260 LEARN drop box Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, in the term end policy analysis the learner will be able to: 1. Describe the extent & nature of inequalities and inequities in health. 2. Define & explain the most common theories used to explain health inequality and inequity. 3. Apply the common theories to discussions of select specific social determinants of health. 4. Compare & contrast these theories & evaluate their effectiveness in describing the social determinants of health. 5. Review governmental and non-governmental policy and practice using the theories discussed in class and in the text, with consideration of the way in which the policy will impact on health via the social determinants. Policy Analysis Evaluation Expectations to ensure equity: 1. Independent work is expected for all learning tasks. 2. All papers will be submitted via LEARN dropbox. Feedback will be uploaded to that dropbox. 3. With acceptable documentation (review the UW Regulations): A. If you do not hand in a proposal for the Policy Analysis it will be reweighted to the Policy Analysis. B. If you do not hand in the Policy Analysis, the course grade will be incomplete (INC) pending submission as arranged with the instructor. This will require a meeting with the instructor to complete the UW INC form. 4. If any term learning tasks are incomplete at the conclusion of the term, and/or the Policy Analysis is not submitted by the due date, a grade of zero for that learning task will be used to calculate the final numeric grade, unless arrangements have been made with the instructor (see point #3). 5. You are advised to familiarize yourself with UW policy and 260 course practices (see page 4 of the course outline). You must abide by those policies and practices. 6. The course will use APA formatting as the expected format for papers and references. APA requires specific cover page format, headings etc. Marks will be allotted for proper format. If you are not familiar with those requirements, links are available on the course LEARN site. You will be reviewing the Ontario Government Housing Policy. You are being asked to evaluate that policy critically, using an intersectional lens. Your critique should discuss both strengths and weaknesses of the policy, and the impact that the policy will have on health, through change to the social determinants.
