In terms of health informatics, BIDMC was an early clinical IT pioneer e.g. in converting all patient paper records to electronic in 1966.  Further pioneering IT advances were the use of email in a medical setting in 1977 and decision support tools such as applications with embedded clinical dosing calculators.  By 1985 capabilities included retrieving data from clinical laboratories, looking up reports from radiology and pathology, demographic data from outpatients, prescriptions filled in outpatients, bibliographical retrieval tools and delivery of patient charts. The pioneering systems were popular as shown by high usage data with inpatient data being accessed an average of four-time per day in 1988.
In 1995 a professional CIO was appointed who broke with the in-house development model to choose a commercial vendor product.  This radical departure from previous philosophy was unsuccessful at the time, in significant part because of the lack of clinical engagement in the selection and configuration of the chosen system.  In 1995 a new CIO, Dr. John Halamka was appointed, and he proved adept at centralizing and standardizing the IT systems across the expanded CareGroup (which included BIDMC).  By 2002 BIMDC was operating with a core system with full web-enabled application accessibility and highly reliable data center operations.  In 2007 overall costs were constrained to 2.5% of operating costs – lower than the industry standard of 2.7%.
A core philosophy was to keep the IT development strongly tied to users (clinicians and hospital staff) with a heavy emphasis on workflow and usability and use of advanced dashboards.
