Assignment Task:

In this task, you will critically analyse workplace violence and aggression in healthcare and reflect upon the impacts of workplace violence and aggression on mental health and well-being.

Assignment Instructions:

Part 1

This part of the assessment task requires you to present a critical analysis about workplace violence and aggression in healthcare. The discussion needs to include:

• Individual patient factors that increase the risk of violence and aggression.
• Workplace factors that increase the risk of violence and aggression.

Part 2

This part of the assessment task requires you to present a critical analysis of the impacts of workplace violence and aggression on nurses’/midwives’ mental health and wellbeing. The number of impacts is not stipulated. It will be up to you to decide how many impacts to discuss.

Note: Part 1 and 2 are NOT a reflection and must be written in the third person perspective. You must also support this section with academic literature such as peer-reviewed journal articles.

Part 3

This part of the assessment task requires you to reflect upon what you have learnt in Part 1 and 2 and link this to clinical practice. 

You must reflect upon an instance of workplace violence and aggression that you have witnessed/experienced as a student nurse/midwife. This may be verbal or physical violence. The reflection needs to include the impact this event had on you as an individual.

If you have not experienced or witnessed an event, you can reflect upon how you think workplace violence and aggression may impact you.

Please only reflect upon an event you feel comfortable with; and not an event that may cause distress. You may use the following questions to assist you with this element of your reflection. These questions are intended to be used as a guide only and you are not required to reflect upon each question.

• What were the individual or workplace factors that contributed to this event? • Could some of these factors have been prevented?
• How was the event managed? What was done well? What could have been improved?
• What was the outcome of this event once it was resolved? You may wish to think about events that happened following the violent/aggressive event; the outcome for the patient; the outcome for the staff; or the outcome for the workplace.

The following questions may assist you with reflecting upon the impacts the event had on you. These questions are intended to be used as a guide only and you are not required to reflect upon each question.

• What was your role in the event?
• How did this event impact you? Were there ongoing impacts?
• How did you manage the impact the event had on you? What was effective? What would you do differently next time? What support/assistance in the workplace/university did you use?

Nursing is a highly rewarding profession and there are multiple workplace factors that have a positive impact on registered nurses’ mental health and wellbeing.
