The client is a 21-year-old male, currently in his last year of university. The client lives in shared housing with his friends. Prior to the assessment, concerns were raised from his GP. His troubles began approximately two months ago (University of Nottingham, 2012).

It is critical to consider the Tidal model when conducting the client assessment. The Tidal model, a recovery focused approach are values that direct practice and consist of 10 principles with 20 competencies (Barker & Buchanan-Barker, 2015) According to the notion, an individual's mental health is influenced the individuals experience, such as his or her self-identity, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. In the mental health context, it may be that individuals have difficulty describing their life experiences, especially when they involve major events or intense emotions, such as death, grief, or loss (Bag, 2019). Therefore, to be able to work with clients effectively to address mental health concerns, there was value in assessment of the expressions and emotions experienced by the clients with mental health. By incorporating the Tidal model, it increased awareness as to how individuals perceived their experiences of mental health. This resulted in regaining their self-identity, dealing with negative life experiences and positive outcomes. The tidal model is a holistic approach that assist individuals to increase quality of life and receiving the necessary care required (Bag, 2019).

It is imperative to consider cultural factors with regard to mental health. Mental illnesses could be affected by cultural influences in terms of symptoms presented, diagnostic assessment, treatment, and outcome. For instance, schizophrenia may be linked to negative karma, spiritual possession, or a mind–body imbalance in certain cultures and religions. Cultural beliefs about demons,

for example, may manifest as psychotic symptoms. Despite this, it is vital to be receptive to how client’s and their families explain, comprehend, or interpret mental illness (Galletly et al., 2016).

The biopsychosocial framework was used to conduct the interview. It is an assessment that is used in mental health in which includes questions regarding psychological, biological, environmental and social factors that could be contributing to a client’s problem (Videbeck & Miller, 2014).
