Context.

This assignment aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of retrofitting existing residential homes with sustainable technologies (features). In undertaking this assignment you will examine various options in regard to improving your home’s energy-efficiency, thermal comfort and impact on the environment.

Task.

In order to understand and complete this task successfully you will need to read the following carefully.
The aim of this assessment is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate that you can research contemporary sustainability concepts & trends and apply these in a practical setting.

There are three separate tasks to be undertaken for the assignment as follows;

Firstly, you will need to research and familiarise yourself with the range of energy-efficient and sustainable technologies (products) that are commercially available and then provide a discussion/review on eight (8) of these different retro-fit measures. To assist, you should also research and read more broadly to understand how human (occupant) behaviours impact upon energy and resource consumption within the residential environment. In your selection of the (8) retro-fit measures, please note the following:
(a) if selecting LED lighting as one of your technologies, they must be analysed as a part of a more extensive lighting upgrade (ie: not just a simple change from Halogen to LED globes.)
(b) if selecting water-tanks as one of the 8 technologies, they must be analysed as a part of a more extensive water treatment upgrade (such as with a reed-garden, water recycling, grey water, etc.)
(c) One of the technologies needs to be a recent invention/innovation (or one that recently become available commercially). Ie; an item which is in the ‘early-adapter’ stage of its product life cycle.
(d) One of the technologies needs to be related to changing the physical structure of the residence. For example, adding a pergola for shade, enlarging a north facing window, etc.

Secondly, having acquired an understanding of the available options to enhance energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint on the environment (and how human behaviours impact upon their performance levels) undertake an inspection and review of your home or place of residence with the aim of assessing what, if any, sustainable features (technologies) the home already possess. List and describe your findings. If you are residing in a multi-storey apartment of Deakin’s student residence, try to source a house owned by a friend or relative. If there are very few obvious existing ‘technologies’ in place to discuss, consider the notion more broadly (such as thermal mass, orientation, etc.)

Thirdly, having undertaken a comprehensive assessment of the energy efficiency and other sustainable characteristics of your home, you are now required to consider how your home’s environmental performance could be improved. Select three (3) technologies that will maximise the environmental performance of your home that you discussed in the first section. The basis of the selection MUST be that you can clearly justify that they are the three (3) which will most improve your home and are also economically feasible to implement. In other words, they provide best return-on-investment (ROI).

In considering your options don’t forget to consider embodied, in-use and transport energies that combine to impact on the carbon footprint your home has. In determining which technologies to recommend you should consider the behaviour of your home’s occupants and whether or not these behaviours need to be changed or modified. For example, if the residents of your home use an excessive amount of water, one of your suggested changes should be to minimise water waste.
