How Do Conduct a Nielsen’s Heuristic Evaluation of An Interactive Prototype Assignment

Assignment Task

Now that you’ve created a prototype of your application, you need to begin testing to get an understanding of the type of user experience it provides. While you would ideally run a user testing study, you will approximate that in this lab, by carrying out a heuristic evaluation on the application you’ve been creating this semester. While this is related to your group project, you must complete this assignment individually, so carry out the heuristic evaluation on your own.

Instructions

Individually, complete the following tasks:

1. Carry out a heuristic evaluation

• Spend approximately 30 minutes using your application

2. Identify any violations of the 10 Usability Heuristics [1] in your prototype. You can include multiple violations of the same principle or choose examples of violations of different principles.

• 10 Usability Heuristics:
  • Visibility of system status
  • Match between system and the real world
  •  User control and freedom
  • Consistency and standards
  • Error prevention
  • Recognition rather than recall
  • Flexibility and efficiency of use
  • Aesthetic and minimalist design
  • Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
  • Help and documentation

3. Provide a description of violation.

4. Assign a severity rating from 0 to 4:

• Not a usability problem
• Cosmetic problem only
•  Minor usability problem
• Major usability problem
• Usability catastrophe

5. Provide rationale for severity rating and discuss potential improvements that can be made.

6. Complete the provided template and submit according to the specifications below.

7. After each member of your group has completed the heuristic evaluation individually, you will need to meet to combine all your results as a group. Where you disagree on the severity or recommendations for improvements, come to some consensus as a group. You don’t need to submit the group results in this lab assignment, but you will discuss those results in the final group presentation.
