Task:
The purpose of this poster isto analyse the effects of urbanisation on Supply Chain Management (SCM). The recent change in the population demographics has resulted in an environment of high competition that aims to meet the ever-changing needs and expectations of consumers. This phenomenon comes associated with multiple challenges. The implications of urbanisation on SCM have been examined with respect to the SCOR Model. The SCOR Model is a management tool that explores the different process involved in a supply chain. This is done considering the inter-relation of people, processes, infrastructure and information systems in SCM. The review suggests the adoption of an integrated, collaborative approach among all players in SCM and embracing technology is key to effectively offset the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities put forth by urbanisation. The world seems to be inadvertently changing. While some changes are temporary, others are transformative such as urbanisation. 54% of the world’s population is estimated to be living in urban areas as of today, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66% by 2050 according to United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), 2014. Managing urban areas is becoming overwhelmingly important,
Influence of urbanisation on Planning in SCM
The design stage of SCM involves devising plans and making decisions on various fronts such as demand forecasting, inventory, transport etc. It is suggested that this stage determines the overall supply chain efficiency of an organisation.
Urbanisation seems to have brought forth a variety of changes such as consumer behaviour fluctuations, preference for convenience and demand for faster delivery which has led to a re- evaluation of decisions (Capgemini, 2016). Almost every decision in SCM comes with a trade-off driving the need for alignment to business strategy all the more important. Bearing that in mind, with the onset of urbanisation, organisations need to formulate their supply chain based on their value chain (Gonzalez-Loureiro, 2015).
