How Lana Del Rey Reinvented the Nostalgic American Singer

Introduction

This study aims at understanding the role of an artist in representation of a nation and its culture, with a reference of an American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey. It focuses on her song lyrics, videos, interviews, tweets and Instagram posts to analyse the portrayal of nationalism and American Culture in her music and public statements. Along with political, racial and socio-cultural aspects of America, this study also focuses on American literary influences and representations present in her art. It also investigates on the concept of cancel culture with special focus on celebrity cancel culture and its operation and role in the society, its efficacy and repercussions.

Objective

The following are the basic objectives of my research.

1. To understand how culture and nationality gets interlaced in creation of any art by an artist.

2. To study in depth of musical construction of nationalism in case of Lana Del Rey.

3. To analyse the nature of American references and the picture they create in the works of Lana Del Rey.

4. To explore the interconnectivity between music and literature through an in-depth analysis of literary references available in her art.

5. To critically examine her “Question to the Culture”

6. To investigate the growth in celebrity cancel culture and question its efficacy in bringing a change and its repercussions.

Methodology

This research uses qualitative methodology to examine the undertaken study. The data that I am using comes from secondary sources like song lyrics, music videos, newspapers, internet posts, interviews and etc. Along with lyric-based discourse analysis of her songs, my research uses theories like intertextuality to understand the nature, symbols, and socio-cultural, political interactions of her songs. Her public statements, posts, interviews will also be analysed to deeper the understanding of her standing. Further this research delves into analysis of twitter platform to study the growth of celebrity cancel culture and its repercussions in today’s society.

Expected Outcome of the Study

The proposed study will indicate the magnitude of American references (in the above mentioned three aspects) present in the art of Lana Del Rey, which on a broader scale leads to an understanding of the integration of the concept of nationality in popular culture media. The study will conduct an in-depth analysis the references of American Literature present in her art, which in turn will help in exploring the intertextuality between two variant modes of self-expression, i.e., song lyrics and literature. Furthermore, studying the cancel culture will conclude with the answer on the question of its efficacy. Overall, this study, when completed, will help in the deeper understanding of the pop music culture, the interrelation between an artist and the audience, and the internet culture.
