This assignment requires you to analyze an important philosophical issue and argue for a coherent position.

It is an essay to be submitted via Turn-it-in by Sunday, June in which you draw upon relevant lectures, assigned topic readings (found on Leganto), and our weeks 9-12 tutorial discussions. You will be particularly assessed on your ability to show and argue for how topics we have covered are relevant to the question.

1. Do ideas of what is ‘natural’ and what is ‘normal’ provide a way of grounding values (‘what ought to be’, ‘who we ought to be’, ‘what we ought to do’ etc) in facts (‘what is’, ‘who we are’ etc)? Or do they show the impossibility of ever being able to do so?

2. To what extent is ethics about figuring out, for oneself, ways to solve problems and know the right to do? Or is there more to it than this?

3. Why do you think technology (especially AI and access to, and distribution of, information) should be treated as an Ethical issue?

4. Can there be an ethical case made for there ever being too much information available? Or is information only ever a good thing?

5. Should professional, legal and lawful (i.e., public) conduct just be about injunctions to do the right thing and prohibitions against doing the wrong thing? Or should they also be concerned with what it means to live a good life and be a better person? Or does this overstep the mark?

6. Is intention sufficient, necessary or irrelevant grounds for judging the moral worth an action?

7. Do we have a moral right to be unhappy and/or unhealthy so long as we are unhappy and/or unhealthy on our own terms?

8. What makes Climate Change such a difficult ethical issue? Consider especially in terms of guilt, agency, blame, fairness and desert?

9. To what extent can the the ‘Reproductive Justice’ framework advocated by thinkers such as Loretta Ross get us beyond the ‘pro-life’ vs ‘pro-choice’ dichotomy?

10. Do you think euthanasia increases individual autonomy and agency or detracts from them? Conisder in the light of both pro- and anti- euthanasia positions.

11. Discuss the benefits and shortcomings of Applied Ethics as a way of determining the Good.
