It is undeniable that people's increased life expectancy impacts on increases in cancer rates and age-related mental diseases, but the biggest risk for many populations is adequate nutrition, which affects metabolically linked diseases, such as diabetes, cardiac health, obesity. Now there is even a bigger threat that adds to destabilizing population health: the predicted increase in frequency of COVID-19-like pandemic, which is linked to the rapid increase of the human population and particularly life-threatening for immune-compromised individuals. All of these issues place immense pressure on health care costs. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that biotechnology can quickly develop vaccines and even accelerate their approvals by health authorities, but this approach is reactive and does not prevent or lessens the threat of transmission within populations. In addition, the long-term effectiveness of mass vaccinations is yet to be demonstrated, as some of the developed vaccines appear to have efficacies. To effectively manage population disease status and looming pandemics will require a three-pronged approach: 1) improve the immune status of the population, 2) improve vaccination efficacies by developing immune-boosting adjuvants and 3) develop functional foods that combat metabolic-induced diseases. The answer for these three action points may well be provided by exploiting the biochemistry tools of plants and animals. Plants like eucalypts and ginseng and marine animals like sea cucumbers produce a diverse arsenal of chemical compounds called saponins, which have been shown to boost the immune system, inhibit the growth of certain tumours, lower cholesterol levels and improve lipid metabolism thereby helping to prevent or treat obesity.
