Creating Animated GIFs in Photoshop

Open a new file and choose the format for your animated gif.

Create layers in Photoshop, either editing by changing each one gradually to show a transition or by introducing new elements to modify the original shape or photograph (remember to duplicate each previous layer if necessary)

You may also create one or more stop motion animated gifs to reflect your concept. You can draw over a photograph with the drawing tools to convey the concept.

Before loading the images to animation, change the document size to approximately 8x6" otherwise the files will be too large to optimize in your web browser.

Once you are happy with the editing approaches to each layer, go to Window Animate and be sure to select Make Frames From Layers. Your layers will load into the Timeline. Change the speed to about 0.2 seconds each frame for a smooth transition. If any layers require editing, click on the layer in the animation window that coincides with the layer in the Photoshop window.

Select the loop option at the bottom left of the Animation Window and select- Forever for continuous loop.

To save your gif, go to File-->Export-->Save for Web. Click on the globe at the bottom of the window to preview in the internet browser, then press ok when you are ready to save.

Task: Create 3 conceptual gifs using Adobe Photoshop or another program that is available to you.

The format of the gif is photo-based.

Possible themes: Abstraction, multiplicity, decay, movement, contrast, sound, repetition, chaos, transition/change, opposites etc
