Assessment Purpose:

To address clinical questions arising from practice, nurses are required to understand how to search and identify relevant literature. Then nurses should use critical thinking to consider application of found findings to their patients. These are critical skills for evidence-based practice. To advance nursing care through evidence-based practice, and to expand nurses’ scope of practice, nurses are required to be informed consumers of research. One avenue for developing this knowledge is to understand research process elements.

When undertaking a research study, a key element is the research proposal. To inform a research proposal’s development a thorough literature review should be performed. This enables construction of an argument that clearly identifies a clinical problems significance. By completing this assessment you should be able to demonstrate that, after finding and reviewing the literature, you become more aware of previous work and the limitations of current evidence. Your literature review will contain a critical review of the appropriate evidence that will lead to the development of a research question, research aims and methods for achieving those aims.
