Why limited color vector graphics?

Limited color vector graphics reduce the continuous tone of a photographic digital image into flat shapes of color while maintaining essential image details. In fact, the reduction to flat color shapes lends it self to emphasizing signature aspects of the subject. The subject becomes more "iconic". The iconic look of simple, flat shapes allows for thematic, "branded" color schemes, and further opens the imagery up to creative integration with type.

Vector graphics also scale well. They can be printed at virtually any size and still maintain their visual integrity. Moreover, they can be produced with great fidelity in many mediums and formats. Below is an example of large banners used to promote special exhibitions by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Notice the use of limited color vector graphics

Keys to Success

    • Image editing: exploring the balance between believable photographic detail and stylized iconic form. How far can you take it? Use tools like the Smooth Tool to further style the resulting image.
    • Composition: cropping for effect within the Clipping Mask shape
    • Integration of type & image - in terms of compositional arrangement as well as font style
    • Use of limited color. Considerations include: "2 similar, 1different" color scheme; control of contrast; subjective feeling, flavor, or vibe
