Description

This assignment builds upon the work of AS1A, you will take all the research collected on your film and chosen stage and integrate them into a series of annotated orthographic and paraline drawings. 

The aim of this assignment is to integrate the range of analysis you'd developed into a trio of discrete drawings, a plan, a section and an axonometric. To do so you will need to produce a 3D Rhino model of the scene using your research and proportional systems to estimate the form of the iconic space.

In addition, any information that is not physical (the form of the space and objects within) must be incorporated as annotations, overlay, symbols or colour codes. 

The value of this task is to develop your 3D modeling skills, as well as your ability to be concise while communicating complex information through a restricted set of drawings.

Identify different perspectives - Director's Intent

Students must clearly articulate in their drawings and verbal presentation how the director has used the medium of film to create the iconic space. Research performed during AS1a should be the basis of what you discuss and expand upon.

Consider the director's opinion and intent as a lens to inform what you draw and why. As one can't draw everything, it is a critical ability to prioritise content and be rigorous in what one does and doesn't draw.

Students should include any critical information about the iconic space, even if only visible 'behind the scenes'. For instance: sets of lighting, hidden structures that support the set, etc… that demonstrate the intent of the director when creating the film. This information can be modelled in 3D, drawn after projecting to 2D, or added as annotations.

Appreciation for digital workflows - Constructing Projections

Students must demonstrate their knowledge of CAD (Computer Assisted Drafting) via the creation of a 3D model using Rhinoceros 3D (mandated cad package) of their Iconic Space, and subsequent projection into a set of architectural drawings. The drawing set will contain both orthographic and paraline drawings:

  • 1x Plan
  • 1x Section
  • 1x Axonometric

This 3D model will be produced using the film as a reference, estimated sizes of objects and figures, comparison between frames, and digital camera techniques.

The scale of the drawings will be negotiated with the tutor depending on the spatial complexity of the image.

Digital and information literacy - Architectural Drawing Conventions

Once, students have projected all the visible elements into 2D linework, they must both clean up and apply line weights/linetypes to be sure the drawings are legible and to an acceptable graphic standard. Can be added in 2D space rather than modelling very complex objects in 3D.

Students are expected to apply representational standards demonstrated during the relevant assignment modules and to use the digital layer index to organise the drawings’ elements. Students are encouraged to use the DIGITAL LAYER INDEX for their digital files:

  • T1: Topography (contours) line-type: Continuous or Dashed, thickness: 0.1 / Hairline
  • A1: Auxiliary lines (structural grid, reference lines) line-type: Continuous or dashed, thickness: 0.05 / Hairline

Critical analysis - Embedding Information

Students must demonstrate appropriate use of annotation text, architectural symbols, and single highlight colour to supplement the subject matter of their drawings as chosen via the use of their themes. These elements are small but critical additions to the drawings to help their legibility through additional context and meaning.

For a pass, drawings must contain the following elements:

  • Title block (including all typical information such as drawing name, author name, page scale, etc)
  • Architectural scale paper size
  • Section markers (in plan).

Higher quality drawing will contain the following elements:

  • Text annotations for critical elements
  • Symbols marking door swings or other obscured elements
  • A 'Zoom in' or 'bubble' detail of a small element
  • Coloured lines or hatches to highlight important elements

Appreciation for iteration - Process Journal

As an ongoing part of student's analytical process, they will use their process journal to digest and respond to pre-tutorial content, class discussion, and assignments. The process journal should be used to take notes, draw sketches, test new skills, and work through problems. This book will serve as a semester-long exploratory tool and will evidence each student's personal inquiry. It is expected that students use the journal during each tutorial session and contribute content throughout the pre-tutorial, between sessions, and after class.
