How to Write a History Research Paper Assignment 

Assignment Task

Students will research the historical experiences of individual European countries. This will culminate in a research essay and presentation. Students will be assigned a country and event to research and write an essay about. After completing their research essay, students will collaborate with their peers also working on that country to present to the class their findings. All marks will be assigned on an individual basis. All assignments must be completed in order to receive marks for this assignment.

Your task in completing this assignment is to research a specific event within each country. Use these questions to help you write your essay:

• What happened in your event? Provide a brief summary of the event.
• What caused your event to happen?
• What were the effects? Consider short and/or long-term effects.
• What was the significance of your event?

Part

1. Topic Proposal and Annotated Bibliography

Provide a short overview of your topic. Also provide an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is short overview of the sources that you plan on using for your assignment. It provides a description and evaluation of your sources that will be cited in your essay. Provide the MLA citation for the source. When completing this assignment, include the following:

• A very short summary of your topic. In other words, what is your topic! This should demonstrate that you have considered what topic you are writing on

In your essay, you must use a minimum of three valid sources. At least two of the sources must be from academic articles or books. You may also use reputable online newspapers or websites. You may use the textbook, but this does not count as one of your three sources. For each source include the following:

• A short summary of the source
• Why the source is relevant to your topic
• MLA Citation

2. Essay

Working individually, you will complete a research essay about your country and event. Your essay will use a variety of sources while researching. Use the questions provided at the beginning of this document to help you write your essay

3. Presentation

You will then prepare a short presentation to deliver to your classmates. This presentation will be completed in groups; however, you will receive marks individually for your own contributions. In your presentation, prepare a brief summary of your findings. 

4. Participation

While your classmates are presenting, you will be expected to complete a participation exercise based upon the submission of your classmates’ multiple-choice.
