Assignment Task
Getting started
- It is not a straightforward journey
- Motivation will fluctuate.
- Action-motivation-action model approach
- Have an intellectual life outside of research
- Doing a research thesis is hard. Some parts are fun. Some parts = nightmare/rollercoaster
- As well as researcher competencies, you need personal strategies for coping with such a large project.
- Be honest about your research timelines, your other commitments and how they connect with your writing plans.
- Communicate openly with your supervisor, and discuss your work/plans. Communicate with fellow students, and swap stories.
Introductions
- Research question(s); aims & objectives
- Context of research & parameters of research
- Materials, Sources
- Indicate methods – but not in-depth
- The literature review may go in here (or as a separate section)
- Quality- look at published work in quality sources to see how written in your discipline
Positioning the thesis:
- Discuss with your supervisor
- For some disciplines, traditional slot is after the introduction (which may include a section on thesis methodology/approach).
- Even within a discipline/method there might be grounds for variation e.g. grounded theory approach
- Issue to resolve: Amount of literature reviewed in later chapters (themes/studies? Include new literature?)
- What if highly-relevant research is published by others towards the end of your period of study?
- As always: Introduction, middle, conclusion! Needs structure
- Build out from own narrative rather v construct from references/sources
- Careful Judgment: identify what is central and what is secondary.
- Always focus on what is significant about the claim/position/findings, avoid superfluous description.
- Key purpose is to provide a context of what is know and what is needed - from which you can justify your own research project
Anonymity
Redacting names is sometimes not enough. The project does not collect identifying information of individual persons (e.g., name, address, email address, etc.) The project cannot link individual responses with participants’ identities
Method
- Strengths and limitations of research tools/approach
- (If relevant: Contextual genealogy/ historical context for your methodology)
- Data collection: target population? sampling method?
- Which type of empirical research?
- Procedure Are participants aware of the entire procedure, including how their data will be used?
- Data Management and Analysis – Where are you keeping it? Is it secure? Is it backed-up? Is your back up secure?
Four main parts:
1. Conclusion: findings, relevance of findings, relationship to existing literature!!
2. Recommendations for practice: practical relevance of the study?
3. Limitations: what are the limits of the study?
4. Suggestions for future research: next steps, next RQ, etc
