For continuous professional development, pastoral care workers (including chaplains) need to ensure they keep regularly updated of the developments in the field. One important skill to assist in this process is the ability to critically review scholarly works as well as government and institutional reports. This assignment is designed to assist you in developing your skills in critically understanding and evaluating scholarly works in the field.

The points outlined below are only guidelines to assist you in your review of the book chapter. You may decide to address other issues, highlighted in the chapter, that you believe are more relevant/significant.

1. Have an introductory paragraph highlighting the purpose of the review, the details of the paper being reviewed, and provide an overview of how your review is organised?

2. Present a summary/overview of the paper in your own words. What are the important issues and main themes raised in the chapter being reviewed?

3. Discuss how convincing is the information/evidence and sources of information?

4. What are the strengths/weaknesses/limitations of the chapter?

5. Outline any additional features/input that may enhance the contents of the chapter.

6. What have you learned/observed from reading the chapter that you were not aware of before?

7. Conclusions (summary of key contribution, and strengths and weakness/limitations of the paper, what you have learned / who would benefit from this paper) - Comment on the authors’ perspectives/contribution to the field of study.
