Assignment Task

Activity

In your selected area of research in your proposal, think of one qualitative question that you might want to ask participants. Remember that qualitative questions do not have preset categories of responses. Share this question with your group along with your overall research question or topic. Then answer the following questions: i. Would this question be best asked in an individual interview or a focus group? What advantages or disadvantages can you see to each? ii. What challenges could you anticipate in asking this question? You might consider your relationships with the participants (or lack thereof), ethical issues, unfamiliar terms, and possible reasons that people might not be able or willing to respond. iii. What are some strategies for addressing these challenges? Discussion

1. One member from each group needs to start the group's discussion thread by posting the blog's url (see Group Blog Assignment instructions). This link must be up and working by the beginning of this week.

2. All students then read through the other groups' blogs. Check out what your colleagues have to teach us - this is knowledge mobilization and exchange in action!

3. Share your thoughts on the topics, on the format or content of their blog, or on questions they pose. Each student is asked to post comments on at least 3 different blogs.

4. As group blog creators, read through and respond to the comments that your blog has inspired.

Some of us have research questions that are really well-represented in published academic literature, and some of us have questions that are either under- represented or misrepresented. For example, some communities have extensive critiques about the way that their experiences and needs are conceptualized in the most mainstream research literature. Other communities feel largely ignored by researchers. Still others might have been fortunate enough to have had researchers attend to their central needs and concerns. In your group, discuss the following:

i. What did you learn about the existing literature on your topic from your search process?

ii. Are there areas of your topic that are well-examined and others that are misunderstood or ignored?
