Essay: “How useful is European and North American sociology for understanding social change in Africa?”. Further details on the essay will be provided on Vula.
The essay is due by 10 am on Wednesday 19th May. It must be fully referenced. You will either argue that European and North American Sociology is very relevant for understanding social change in Africa by showing how some of the theory and authors discussed in the course resonate closely and clearly with experiences in Africa - think of Marx, Du Bois etc. and what they offer the discipline (like we did in tutorials).
OR you will argue European and North American Sociology is not very relevant for understanding social change in Africa. You can draw on Magubane and other authors that argue that European Sociology is colonial, and that the discipline needs to produce IN Africa and FOR Africa, by drawing on African scholars. BUT remember that Magubane himself draws on European and American Scholars (like Marx). He is critiquing particular Eurocentric ways of researching Africa (like a focus on consumption that does not pay attention to oppression and capitalist powers).
What ever you argue, you need to make your case with an awareness of the other side. Hence HOW relevant, and so you may be able to credit both sides of the argument even while making a stance.
The point is to show that you have engaged with readings and lectures, and so you want to draw on this section of the course as widely and thoroughly as is possible. You also want to display understanding, so don’t just repeat what has been said in readings and lectures - engage with it (be in a conversation so to speak).
