Produce a report that responds to the following questions. For the following, choose either the Reading outcome variables or the Numeracy variables.

  1. How would you describe the overall distribution of the dependent variables available in the data? (Either Reading or Numeracy – years 3 and 5, score and band.) For this consider the overall sample mean, n, standard deviation, skew and kurtosis.
  2. Pick two schools, and test whether or not their performance differ statistically. (You need to construct a change score.)
  3. Now pick one social factor (ATSI, LBOTE, GENDER) and test whether or not there are differential performances for that social difference on each outcome (Reading AND Numeracy outcomes). Report a) your chosen procedure, and b) the results that determine your answer.
  4. Band Scores are derived from the raw scores. How do the results of band scores compare to their respective raw score?

To test for differential outcomes, determine which differences are statistically significant, and determine the effect size for any two-group comparisons of those differences using the conventional formula for Cohen’s d (ignore missing data when determining the effect size for now). For the purposes of this task, you will need to attend to / correct variable definitions and types, and you might want to consider computing a scale of achievement gain (the pre - post difference). You are not expected to demonstrate an understanding of how bias may have impacted your findings and interpretations, nor the logic of hypothesis testing (although these will be expected in the second task).
