Mindfulness is Safe, but Minimally Beneficial for Children
Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression severely affects the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents (Attar, et al., 1994; Pao & Bosk, 2011). One technique that may alleviate and protect against negative mood symptoms in children is mindfulness (Felver et al., 2016; Kallapiran, et al., 2015). Mindfulness involves non-judgmental awareness of one’s internal and external environment (Kabat?Zinn, 2003). Although there is currently limited evidence that mindfulness is effective for adults (Chiesa & Serretti, 2009), there is evidence that mindfulness based training (MBT) programs may benefit children and adolescents (Felver et al., 2016; Kallapiran et al., 2015). This essay contends that MBT is a safe technique that may reduce stress and anxiety in children with and without mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. However, it is also contended that MBT has not been shown to be effective for reducing the primary symptoms found in sleep disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or in children with chronic pain, or learning disabilities. It will be argued that MBT can reduce some anxiety and stress in non-clinical and clinical child populations, it has limited effectiveness for reducing primary clinical symptoms in neurological, intellectual and psychiatric conditions, and has an excellent safety profile. There is preliminary evidence that MBT can reduce negative symptoms of anxiety, and stress in non-clinical child and adolescent populations (Felver et al., 2016). A recent systematic review evaluating the effectiveness of MBT in school settings found that although several studies have reported reductions in anxiety symptoms these changes were often small (Felver et al., 2016). For example, Britton et al. (2014) investigated a 6-week MBT module in 114 6th grade children and reported reductions in anxiety in the mindfulness group when measured using the Speilberger State-Train Anxiety Inventory-Child version (STAI-C).
