3. Background As outlined in AT1, ‘cannabidiol’ is an extract of plants from the Cannabis genus that has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention for psychological and physical conditions. Some research suggests that cannabidiol may be have applications in the treatment of a range of disorders including anxiety disorders (Blessing et al., 2015; Crippa et al., 2011), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Bitencourt & Takahashi, 2018), and neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis (Rog, Nurmikko & Young, 2007). While some studies indicate that cannabidiol may be effective at reducing symptoms of these conditions when applied either alone or in combination with more established treatment approaches like exposure therapy (Das et al., 2013), consensus on the efficacy of cannabidiol, including which disorders and populations it might treat, has not yet been reached despite the growing popularity of cannabidiol and other cannabis derived products.

4. Task Your task is to develop a sound, well-reasoned, and empirically supported position on the issue of whether psychologists should be using cannabidiol to treat psychological disorders. A strong response will be based on multiple lines of argument each of these being supported with appropriate evidence and argued logically. You will need to conduct a literature search to help identify empirical studies to support your argument. You need to draw on reliable evidence in the form of journal articles to support the claims and arguments you create. You must present relevant, compelling and reliable evidence to support your position. Your position should be well balanced, logical, and empirically sound (e.g. based on evidence). You can present an argument that supports use in some instances, but not others, if that reflects what the literature is telling you.
