Study 1
You ask a sample of young adults how many minutes they engage in physical activity in a typical week. You also measure the quality of their sleep using a sleep quality assessment. Higher scores on this assessment indicate better sleep quality.
The data from this study can be found in the file Sleep.omv. The variable Exercise indicates how many minutes a participant engages in physical activity in a typical week. The variable SleepQuality indicates the score on the sleep quality assessment for each participant.
Question
1. Conduct a regression analysis to test if physical activity is a significant predictor of sleep quality (attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission). Report the results of the analysis in APA format including all relevant information. (3 Marks)
2. Would you recommend physical activity as a lifestyle intervention to improve sleep quality? Justify your response.
3. Scores on the sleep quality assessment are normally distributed (M = 70, SD = 5). Assume that young adults who score in the top 25% on the sleep assessment are considered to have high sleep quality. Maya engages in more than 30 minutes of physical activity in a typical week. Would Maya be expected to have high sleep quality? Show your workings and justify your response.
Study 2
Dr Zen wants to investigate if individual differences in the number of hours slept is associated with individual differences in subjective wellbeing. She measures subjective wellbeing in a sample of young adults using a self-report questionnaire (higher scores on the questionnaire indicate higher levels of subjective wellbeing). She also asks each participant how many hours they sleep during a typical night. She then runs a linear regression to test if the number of hours slept is a significant predictor of subjective wellbeing.
The data from this study can be found in the file Zen.omv. The variable SleepHours indicates the number of hours slept for each participant during a typical night. The variable Wellbeing indicates scores on the subjective wellbeing questionnaire for each participant.
Question
1. Based on the data collected, Dr Zen concludes that the more hours a person sleeps, the higher their subjective wellbeing. Is Dr Zen’s conclusion accurate? Justify your response and attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission.
