4. A study was conducted to identify the effect of smoking (non-smokers, current smokers, ex-smokers, and tobacco chewers) on systolic blood pressure. Samples are
selected from each subgroup and data are shown in Worksheet 1. Data are expressed in mm Hg. Assume that systolic blood pressure is normally distributed, does systolic
blood pressure depends on smoking?
5. Consider a study designed to investigate the amount of energy expended by patients with the congenital disease cystic fibrosis is higher than that of normal healthy person. The variable of interest is the energy expenditure while at rest for persons suffering from this disease and for healthy individuals matched to the patients on certain important characteristics. Worksheet 3 shows the measurements of resting energy expenditure for samples of 13 patients with cystic fibrosis and 13 healthy individuals matched to the patients on age, sex, height, and weight.
6. Nineteen individuals with asthma were enrolled in a study investigating the respiratory effects of sulphur dioxide. During the study, two measurements were obtained for each subject. The first is the increase in specific airway resistance (SAR)-a measure of bronchoconstriction-from the time when the individual is at rest until
after he or she has been exercising for 5 minutes; the second is the increase in SAR for the same subject after he or she has undergone a similar exercise test conducted in an atmosphere of 0.25 ppm sulphur dioxide. The data were provided in worksheet 5.Do you think there is an increase in SAR in an atmosphere of 0.25 ppm sulphur dioxide?
7. A group of children five years of age and younger who were free of respiratory problems were enrolled in a cohort study examining the relationship between parental
