Assignment Task:

As an HR professional that has extensive operational management experience across public and private sectors, including my own HR consultancy, I strive to continually develop both myself and those around me through lecturing and academic mentoring.

I currently deliver teaching at Leicester's De Montfort University and Nottingham Trent  University, leading CIPD accredited modules within their HRM Level 7 courses, International  Business and Undergraduate employability modules. I also teach on an international scale  delivering guest lectures, masterclasses and modules within China, Malaysia and Europe.  This extends my personal development within the education sector whilst enabling me to  share my knowledge by developing HR practitioners of the future.

My journey in HR management began in retail, transferred through the NHS and extended  into managing my own HR Consultancy - Dragonfly HR Ltd; supporting and deliver Change  Management projects and Business Development for companies aiming to bridge the gap by  injecting and aligning HR strategy within their organisation. Supporting engagement whilst  ensuring best practice and legislation is adhered to. Delivering successful contracts for  University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, DMU, Loughborough College, 3M, VOLT,  Vacancy Filler and Shakespeare's Birthplace Trust among other SME's.

Believing strongly upon teaching in an interactive format Nicola brings her experiences to  the classroom and shows the application of theory to real life operational examples.  Continually developing and building upon her knowledge and experiences has resulted in  her attaining the level of Chartered Membership within the CIPD (MCIPD) and the Fellow  status with the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Module aims

Welcome to the Developing Skills for Business Leadership module.

This module is primarily concerned with the development of skills and is specifically  designed to help you develop and improve your study skills, your management skills and  your interpersonal skills. It is strategically positioned at the beginning of your programme of  study so that, having raised your awareness of these skills, you can take the opportunities  which arise throughout your studies, to refine and enhance these further. It is important  here to appreciate that this module is more of a beginning than an end. Even when the  assessment has been completed, the insights and skills developed here should be guiding  you through the remainder of your studies and through your professional career. Key to the  success of this module is the development of reflective practice, the refinement of your  critical thinking skills, and the ability to think about HR within the context of sustainable  business.

Module aims

There is no single set of traits or abilities that typify the successful human resource (HR)  professional. Rather HR practitioners have different approaches to their work, based on a  diverse range of personality traits, attributes and beliefs. These characteristics are refined  by experience and learning with a mix of nature and nurture can be seen to underpin skills  proficiency. It is because of the influence that these characteristics have on our skills and  competences that it is useful to develop insights into and awareness of these, and of the  ways in which they influence what we do. Study at post-graduate level requires you to think  critically about the theories and concepts that you will be studying, so if we are asking you  to be critical of the work of others, it makes sense that we ask you to be critical of yourself.  It is perhaps important here to clarify what we mean by critical- in this context we are  looking for well-reasoned academic debate, i.e. the good points and well as those deemed  less appropriate, the strengths as well as the limitations. Reflecting on your own thoughts  and ideas, your opinions and practices can help you to make sense of what you do and why,  and think about alternative strategies where necessary.

Objectives and Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, learners will be able to:

1. Demonstrate competence in postgraduate study skills.

2. Manage themselves more effectively in a professional context.

3. Manage interpersonal relationships at work more effectively.

4. Make sound and justifiable decisions and solve problems more effectively. 5. Lead and influence others more effectively.

6. Interpret financial information and understand the management financial  resources.

7. Demonstrate enhanced IT proficiency.

8. Demonstrate an essential people management skill-set.
