Highlights
The Assessment Guide is your starting point for all the assessments included in HRMT2237. The Guide provides helpful overviews and guidelines for each assignment. The Assessment Guide is designed to support your successful completion of the unit while maximizing your learning. Any questions regarding the content of the Guide should be directed to your Unit Coordinator, Dr. Joseph Carpini.
This Assessment Guide should be read in conjunction with the Unit Outline available through the LMS system and the UWA Handbook.
Although this Assessment Guide has been designed to help students understand the assessments included in the HRMT2237 unit, students should also attend to additional details and advice provided in the workshops and unit announcements.
Purpose
Conduct an in-depth and focused literature review guided by an issue/problem/situation faced by a real organisation. This assessment component is designed to develop your research skills and help you prepare for your written assignment.
The key here is to use your media article to develop an “answerable question” that you will seek to answer using the scientific literatures in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour.
HOT TIP: Developing an Answerable Question
The number one thing students struggle with when conducting the case analysis is developing an “answerable question” from their media article.
The media articles you’ve selected all describe an organisation facing an HR challenge for better or worse. These challenges look very different as a function of the organisational context and case-specific details. In your oral presentations you are welcome to dive right into these and discuss. However, in your written assignments it is important to frame your HR challenge in such a way that you can conduct an in-depth literature review. This means you need to identify an answerable question.
The formulation of an answerable question means positioning the HR challenge in such a way that it becomes a question that can be answered using the HR and OB literatures. This is often helped by understanding why the HR issue described is important in the first place. Often times HR challenges are important because they have implications for individuals (e.g., employee performance, job satisfaction, turnover, learning, wellbeing), teams (e.g., productivity, cohesiveness, innovation), and organisations (e.g., performance, survival). Answerable questions look like:
Essentially, you are creating a question that you can then research based on the facts of your media article. The key is to drill down far enough that you find a clear question but not too far that you make it impossible to find high-quality articles. For example, drilling down too far would be:
How will you know if you have a “good” answerable question? That is a good question itself! There will likely be a bit of “hit and miss” and learning along the way. Try to formulate various questions like those above and then check the literature. If you are picking up weird or obscure journals, then it is likely that your topic is too narrow. You will need to refine your keywords when using OneSearch which is a learning process.
The key here is to develop an answerable question based on your media article, to lend on the HR / OB literature to talk about the issue generally, then use your amazing brains to link the general information you reviewed back to the issue at hand. This is essentially the cycle of evidence-based practice! It is highly unlikely you will ever find a high-quality peer-review article exactly on the described issue, the skill we want to develop here is the ability to identify, integrate, and translate research into real-world recommendations. It is harder than one might think which is why it is worth doing.
