To familiarise yourself with the expectations of writing a practical report and to gain an understanding of what makes a good report, a good place to start is to carefully read the rubric provided in the Prac folder on CloudDeakin. A submission template is also available in the same folder.

The introduction should contain a logical sequence of arguments that leads the reader to the aim. In this experiment, we are collecting physiological data in response to a challenge, but what is the background and justification for what we are doing? Your task is to clearly introduce the topic. For your introduction, you will need to consult some peer reviewed journal articles to support the statements made in your introduction so please use in-text citations and include the ones you use in your reference list. Then, you will generate a clear and logical aim that sets out the purpose for this study. Remember the results need to clearly answer the aim of the study so be sure to think about the results you will be presenting. Be specific when you are writing your aim. 

Methods: Do not include a methods section in your prac report as the methods were provided to students in the practical manual.

Results: For the results section, you will begin to develop skills in data analysis and presentation. Once data
collection is complete, the data spreadsheet will be available for download in CloudDeakin. Your
results section will consist of:

  • a written paragraph describing the major findings – word limit is 200 words
  • a table, which presents your results

Discussion 

Interpreting results and formulating a discussion around a topic are extremely important skills in
scientific writing. This is where you tell the reader what the results mean in the context of the
“known” physiology and how your results are credible. Therefore, once your results section is
complete, these results need some interpretation and need to be given some meaning in a
physiological context.
In the text of your discussion section, address the following questions, citing references where
appropriate:

  • Are these findings expected and supported by current literature?
  • What are the significance and physiological implications of the findings?

You will need to formulate a discussion that clearly interprets your findings in the context of what is already known about the topic and how your results either support or contradict what has
previously been shown.
