During the first Seminar 2 (in week 2), you will be assigned one of the following debate topics. Note:
Do not assign yourself a topic; you must attend the seminar to be assigned a topic.
1. Governments should continue to invest heavily in promoting sports participation in young people, rather than investing in active free play.
2. For adults, high intensity interval training is a better form of physical activity than participation in regular, moderate intensity physical activity.
3. It would be better for governments to focus their efforts on reducing sedentary behaviour in adults, rather than in children.
4. Active gaming offers a viable solution to the challenge of increasing population levels of physical activity.

Part A: Written Assignment
For this piece of assessment, you are required to construct a written argument systematically supporting or rejecting the debate question assigned to you. The purpose of the essay is to think critically about available, high?quality evidence to persuade (or convince) the reader that the position you take is the correct one.
Your essay should clearly state the argument and provide evidence from high?quality sources to support your argument and refute a counter?argument. Your assignment should contain the following information:
 

Introduction: In the introduction, you should briefly explain the essay topic and include relevant background information to familiarise the reader with the topic. A sentence at the end of the introduction that will transition the reader to your argument is useful. Perhaps the most important thing to ensure the introduction does is clearly articulate the question as well as the position (affirmative / negative) being taken.

Part B: Oral Debate Presentation
For this piece of assessment, you are required to participate in a one?on?one debate with another class member during the last two weeks of Trimester (week 10 or week 11). You will be assigned a debate ‘partner’ – that is a student who was assigned the same topic, but the alternative argument.
 

The presentations will follow the structure below:
1. Student who is arguing for the ‘affirmative’ given up to 6 minutes to speak.
2. Student who is arguing for the ‘negative’, given six minutes to speak – 1 minute for rebuttal of arguments presented by the ‘affirmative’ speaker and 5 minutes to deliver the formal component of their presentation
3. Student who is arguing for the ‘affirmative’ given one minute for rebuttal of arguments presented by the ‘negative’ speaker (no more than 1 minute).
