Assignment Overview
This assignment entails the development of a Professional Practice Portfolio.  A professional portfolio is a reflective and personal statement about you, your competence and development as nurse and a systematic collection of evidence to support your competence. Basically, it showcases who you are as a professional nurse and provides evidence to answers the question, why should the NMBA register me? Therefore, you need to choose what to include that best represents you and your achievements and future plans as a Registered Nurse.
What is a Professional Portfolio?
• Is a collection of carefully selected materials and evidence that documents your competency and expertise as a nurse.
• Is developed over time and allows you to monitor your own professional development.
• The portfolio is reviewed regularly so that you can assess your progress towards achieving your professional goals
• Provides you with a career plan in nursing
• Is a ‘living’ document that demonstrates your critical thinking, values, beliefs, knowledge and skills
• Application of knowledge to practice through an understanding of the ways in which context shapes your practice and clinical competence.
Instructions
While there are very good guidelines on what to include and how to present your portfolio, there is no right or wrong content. However, what you choose to present should be clear and concise, and the justification, evidence and plan should be convincing.
Getting Started:
1. Access the E-portfolio tile within Moodle and use all the available resources. The resources if used, will provide you with information on how to set up your E portfolio (with your evidence that shows your learning) and how to submit your E-portfolio.
2. Set up your E-portfolio using the modified template provided within Moodle. Your E-portfolio should address the following key sections:
o Section 1:          Personal Profile
o Section 2:          Curriculum Vitae
o Section 3:          Professional Qualifications and experience to date
o Section 4:          Continuing professional education
o Section 5:          Teaching and presentation activities
o Section 6:          Professional memberships
o Section 7:          Publication and research activities
o Section 8:          ANSAT and NMBA Competency Links
o Section 9:          Reflection/ Critical incident reports and analysis
o Section 10:        Development Plans using SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely)

3. Using information from your Cheng & Daly textbook Chapter 17 Establishing and maintaining a professional identity: portfolios and career progression to assist you with understanding the principles behind the Professional portfolio.
4. Access the (NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You might find it useful to begin this process by using the self-assessment questionnaire for registration. However, in your portfolio you must go on and provide justification and supporting evidence of your achievements to support your claims. This may include assignment feedback and marks or unit grades from units over the course of your study, as well as your clinical practice reports.
5. Include some examples of reflection on critical incidents towards your practice as a beginning level nurse and identify gaps in your professional competence. You will also reflect meaningfully about addressing those gaps as an important lifelong skill that accrediting bodies expect professionals to continuously engage in. Values and attitudes are just as important as clinical nursing skills. The focus of this part of the task is not about developing psychomotor skills but about context of delivery, context of care, tacit and explicit knowledge. Demonstrate engagement in a structured reflection process centered on your clinical experience throughout your Nursing studies and provide a brief analysis of how a particular incident has informed your ongoing development as a reflective health practitioner and how it will inform your beginning level practice as a registered nurse.
6. Identify overall career goals for the first and then the 2nd years of your registered nursing career. Consider your goals and how you can achieve them in relation to other life choices/plans; for example, you might intend to travel, have children in that time or work part-time. The career goals must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely). Use the headings in grid format: Objectives, Rationale, Strategy and Evidence to write them.
7. Included in your goals should be an outline of any post graduate education or continuing professional development activities you need to engage with to achieve your goals. Be specific, refer to actual courses, and reference your sources.
