You are a caseworker working for an organization that provides emergency housing and general support to clients. A 56-year-old woman, a grandmother of two children arrives at your service; she has been living in a car for two weeks. The children are sitting in the waiting area and you notice quickly that both children are acting out with the eldest (aged 9 years) intimidating and threatening his younger sister (aged 5 years). The girl child is grossly underweight, timid, and appears anxious and does not respond to you. The grandmother informs you that she is depressed and the primary carer of the children as their mother is never around. She needs housing as she wants to leave her abusive husband of 11 years and she is worried for the children. She is hesitant to tell you details but you can see bruises on her and the older child.  The children begin to get rowdy and she says that she cannot control them because they “don’t listen to her no more”. She also states that their father shows up sometimes but is a “useless drunk”. She tells you that she really needs “some groceries and a house quickly”. She is willing to work but is not sure where to start, she is convinced that housing is all she needs for “a fresh start”.
