Working independently, each student will propose an original research study related to the human services sector. An important note: Students will not conduct this research; the assignment is only to propose a research plan. This is an important distinction because we will not have enough time to successfully navigate the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process required before students at East Central University are allowed to conduct research. To be
clear, students enrolled in this course will:
• NOT contact anyone outside this course to conduct any form of research
• NOT conduct interviews or focus groups of any kind
• NOT gather primary data by conducting surveys
• Instead, students will create a written proposal of how an original research plan could be conducted. All proposals are hypothetical and are for learning purposes only. No work will go beyond the boundaries of this course.
Students will prepare three separate elements of a standard research proposal. These are: Introduction, Literature Review, and Methodology section. Combined, these elements will constitute your research proposal for this online course:
The first step is to select a research topic and begin to create your specific research question(s).
The nature of your research question(s) will determine if your proposal is quantitative or qualitative in nature. 
 
Quantitative research plans typically include the following sections:
1. Introduction/Explanation of Research Topic.
Because the topic sets the stage for the rest of the plan, it should be stated as early and clearly as possible. The statement should be accompanied by a description of the background of the topic and a rationale for its significance.

2. Literature Review.
The review of related literature should provide an overview of the topic and present references related to what is known about the topic. The literature review should lead logically to a testable conclusion (aka your hypothesis). The review should conclude with a brief synthesis of the literature and its implications for the sector.

3. Methodology.
The specific method of research your study represents will affect the format and content of your method section. The method section for an experimental study, for example, typically includes
a description of the experimental design whereas the design and procedure sections may be combined for a descriptive (aka survey) study. In general, the method section includes a description of the research participants, measuring instruments, design, and procedure.

4. Research Question.
The research question(s) should be stated as clearly as possible.
Participants. The description of participants should identify the number, source, and characteristics of the sample. It should also define the population -- the larger group from which the sample will be selected. Answer questions: What are members of the population like? How large is it? How will participants be selected from the larger population?
