Highlights
PURPOSE OF THE ASSESSMENT WORK:
Assessment 1 has three main purposes, all of which are folded under the function of practicing the summarizing a research proposal. Firstly, this activity gives you an opportunity to practice creating an abstract using the ‘FLEI’ recipe discussed in Workshop #1. While the FLEI recipe is not sacred or perfect, it is a great way to organise your ideas in a quick, effective, and professional manner. Moreover, the FLEI recipe is an excellent tool for you to practice the use of for any career that may involve writing summaries of documents and/or projects.
Secondly, this activity gives you practice at thinking and writing about research impact following the 3-step model discussed in Workshop #2. As discussed in the workshop, impact is often a difficult construct for researchers to grapple with – but thinking about it during the design phase of a project gives you some opportunity to flesh out where your research might be of benefit beyond its academic contribution. Plus, using the 3-step model is a handy way to prompt yourself when working to produce text.
Thirdly, this task serves as a drafting ground for later assessment tasks in RD2. Our aim is that the work you do for Assessment 1 serves as early thinking and an early version of the two summary sections of your Assessment 5 Written Proposal. Remember, writing is thinking!
The feedback we will give you will be aligned to clarity of expression and guidance on using the two recipes/models discussed in the workshops. Our aim is that feedback will help you develop and continue your learning about writing summary units of text.
CONTENT OF THE WORK:
In terms of content, your submission should be about your project. The exercise is to shape that content into the forms we’ve looked at:
The Abstract should follow the FLEI recipe. We’re asking you to practice using it as a way of developing your understanding about the functions summary texts can have for readers. Each letter in the acrostic is a function for a reader. Let’s practice making functional text.
The Impact Statement should follow the 3-step model of Aims, Beneficiaries, and Benefits. Again, the exercise is to practice producing text that functions to signal each of these elements to readers in your impact statement.
A1 Unit Learning Outcomes:
The Subject Learning Outcome for Researcher Development 1 (HUMN4002) that are relevant to Assessment 1 is:
1. Upon successful completion of RD2, students will have demonstrated ability to:
2. Design a research project that adapts knowledge from diverse sources and articulates research questions that can be feasibly interrogated through research.
When assessing, our working assumption is that the writing you submit represents a preceding act of learning on your part. That means, we assume that your submission is a consequence of having learned something. Our assessment, therefore, is whether your submission demonstrates to us that what you learned was aligned with the SLOs. For Assessment 1 that means, ‘do your draft summaries take a form that indicates learning about how to efficiently express research design choices in the context of Abstract and Impact Summary units of text?’
