The Toohey Forest is a valuable remnant forest ecosystem that supports many native flora and fauna species endemic to the greater Brisbane area. With the increase in extreme weather conditions and climate change, it is important to understand how different tree species are responding. This research project will explore the differences in water consumption between three tree species within the Toohey Forest: Eucalyptus tereticornis, Eucalyptus microcorys, and Melaleuca quinquenervia by measuring tree sap flow.
Tree sap flow is a physiological characteristic that can be measured using sap flow sensors. Sap flow sensors have been used extensively in plantations, orchards, and vineyards to improve crop yield as well as to study the effectiveness of phytoremediation technologies. By measuring sap flow, one can increase our understanding of plant-water relationships which will be beneficial for:  

• Understanding how different tree species may respond to seasonal weather patterns and long-term climate change.  
• Determining whether there is a correlation between sap flow and the seasonal migration of koalas within the forest.  
• As guidance for designing phytoremediation technologies such as phytointerception of groundwater and pollutants within the Southeast Queensland area.  
• Comparison against sap flow performance of the same tree species in different climate zones. 

Project
