Assessment 1

Requirements

  • The assignment is an individual research report, with a 1000-words length.
  • At least 10 references with appropriate in-text citations.
  • This report should be organised in a typical academic writing structure.

This assignment should be submitted on 16/04/2025 11:59:59pm (AEST). Any submission after the due date will be dealt with late submission penalties. A penalty of 5% per day will apply for late submissions.

Students will select a cloud computing topic. Students will research the topic including its importance, current implementation, issues and challenges in the literature. Students should include recent papers and articles in their research report. Students will be marked based on the quality of the investigation conducted and the technical challenges and proposed solutions from the literature.

Suggested Research Topics

Choose one major topic (or a cluster of related sub-topics) from the following list. Students are encouraged to propose additional topics relevant to Cloud Computing with the lecturer’s approval.

  • Cloud Computing Models & Architectures
  • Virtualization & Containerization
  • Security, Privacy, and Compliance
  • Performance Optimization & Scalability
  • Cloud Migration and Integration
  • Big Data Analytics in the Cloud
  • Future Directions in Cloud Computing

Summary of the Assessment Requirements

The assessment is an individual 1000-word research report focusing on a cloud computing topic selected from the approved list (e.g., architectures, virtualization, security, scalability, migration, big data analytics, or future trends). Students may also propose their own topic with lecturer approval.

To meet the requirements, the report must:

  • Include at least 10 academic references supported with correct in-text citations.
  • Follow a formal academic structure, including an introduction, body sections, and conclusion.
  • Discuss the topic’s importance, current implementations, technical issues, and challenges, supported by recent literature.
  • Present analysis of proposed solutions or future directions identified in the research.
  • Be submitted by 16/04/2025 (11:59:59 pm AEST) to avoid late penalties (5% per day).

Overall, the assessment evaluates the student’s ability to conduct academic research, critically review contemporary cloud computing literature, and articulate the technical complexities of the chosen topic.

How the Academic Mentor Guided the Student

Step 1: Topic Selection and Scope Definition

The mentor first helped the student choose a relevant and manageable topic from the provided list. They refined the scope to ensure the student could cover importance, implementation, challenges, and solutions within the 1000-word limit.

Step 2: Structuring the Report

The mentor outlined a clear academic structure:

  1. Introduction
  2. Background/Importance of the Topic
  3. Current Implementations (Industry & Research)
  4. Issues and Technical Challenges
  5. Solutions / Proposed Approaches from Literature
  6. Conclusion
  7. Reference List (APA/Harvard depending on the unit’s requirements)

This helped the student maintain logical flow and meet academic writing expectations.

Step 3: Conducting Literature Review

The mentor guided the student to:

  • Use scholarly databases (IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Google Scholar).
  • Prioritize recent research (last 5–7 years).
  • Select at least 10 credible sources directly linked to the chosen topic.
  • Extract key arguments, methodologies, and findings from each source.

The mentor also taught the student how to paraphrase effectively and include correct citations.

Step 4: Writing the Introduction

The student was instructed to:

  • Introduce the cloud computing theme and selected sub-topic.
  • Highlight its relevance in today’s digital environment.
  • State the purpose and structure of the report.
This created a professional opening aligned with academic norms.

Step 5: Developing Each Main Section

The mentor walked the student through each section:

  • Importance & Background: Explain why the topic matters in modern cloud ecosystems.
  • Current Implementations: Describe real-world use cases, technologies, and industry adoption.
  • Issues & Challenges: Present technical limitations, security concerns, performance gaps, or governance issues from literature.
  • Proposed Solutions: Summarize research-backed approaches, architectural improvements, algorithms, or tools discussed in recent studies.

Each subsection was supported with citations to ensure academic integrity and evidence-driven arguments.

Step 6: Drafting the Conclusion

The mentor advised the student to:

  • Summarize key insights without introducing new ideas.
  • Reinforce the significance of the topic.
  • Highlight how research findings contribute to solving current challenges.

Step 7: Final Review & Citation Check

The mentor guided the student to:

  • Proofread the report for clarity, cohesion, grammar, and technical accuracy.
  • Ensure the reference list contained at least 10 sources.
  • Confirm consistency of citation style throughout.
  • Check word count and formatting before submission.

Final Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved

The completed assessment:

  • Addressed all required sections within the 1000-word limit.
  • Incorporated 10+ up-to-date scholarly references.
  • Presented a structured and analytical discussion of the selected cloud computing topic.
  • Showcased understanding of current implementations, challenges, and research-backed solutions.
  • Demonstrated strong academic writing, critical thinking, and research skills.

Learning Objectives Achieved Include

  • Ability to conduct focused academic research on cloud computing themes.
  • Critical evaluation of contemporary technological challenges.
