ICT50415 - Diploma of Information Technology Networking Assessment Answer

Project Brief

XYZ Consultants have been engaged by ABC Training College to prepare the preliminary design and scope of works for a complex network upgrade to the existing IT infrastructure that the college is operating. Several IT companies have been invited to respond to the College’s tender processes and will be supplied with a technical briefing with supporting documents.

ABC Training College is seeking to expand and they would like a more secure and efficient network to enable this expansion process to occur effectively. The College has lost two long-serving IT Administrators early last year, and these staff members have not been replaced by the previous owners of the business.

The College has also previously engaged smaller regional IT companies in the past and found these companies services to be substandard. As a result of these events, the College is currently experiencing more network downtime, as well as a generally slow network, and additionally, they have a restricted and outdated IT infrastructure.
The College has recently changed ownership and merged with another training provider, and so is now one of the largest private training companies in Western Australia. The new CEO has identified the issues associated with the previous IT Suppliers and terminated any existing commercial agreements.

The head office is located in West Perth, and the college operates four sites in Perth and one site in Albany. The head office has 100 staff members including over 50 lecturers. Note that the Albany campus is smaller and has 40 staff including 12 lecturers.
The College provides industry-relevant training in the following job sectors to a range of students:

•    Information Technology
•    Business and Finance
•    Electronics
•    Electrical
•    Plumbing and Gas
•    Machining and Fitting

The upgrade project will be initially undertaken at the West Perth head office, and it anticipated that the accepted solution will be readily adaptable for use in the remaining offices. The training college has specified a time frame of 6 months, and they would like any downtime within the upgrade process to be specified and agreed to before any alterations to the network are undertaken.

Preliminary discussions have identified that the College already uses older Cisco Equipment and a mix of older HP and Dell servers. However, there is no brand loyalty and the successful bidder is invited to use their discretion when suggesting suitable new equipment.
The College is especially interested in the support contracts that will be put in place, and will readily agree to an industry-standard support rate of 20% of the value of the equipment.

The successful IT contractor will be responsible for the proof of concept testing and implementation of the upgraded campus network. The main aim of the contractor is to ensure that the training college has a more efficient network that has less downtime as well as having a faster network connection.
Additionally, the contractor would ensure that the Training College has the appropriate security processes and standards implemented to ensure that both user accounts and important data are protected.
