Overview of Assessment

This assessment will require you to design and create an intranet using services from a Linux Operating system.
The assessment is broken up and assessed in 3 parts and you will submit each part gradually as you develop your skills through the course. The 3 parts consist of:

Part A – Determining client requirements
Determining client requirements by investigating services that a Linux operating system can provide in alignment with a client’s network requirements

Part B – Build an intranet
Implementing network services to build an intranet such as:
DNS, DHCP, Mail, FTP, NTP, Proxy, SMB, HTTP, Authentication service

Part C – Intranet Documentation
Creating quality documentation for the implemented intranet for future reference or future expansion of the intranet. This includes the correct IT documentation structure and configuration information of an intranet service/s.

Assessment Scenario
You are an IT consultant for Geeks4PC and have been approached by JHIT, an organization that wishes to implement an intranet for collaborating activities within the organization. The employees work independently but the organization is having trouble disseminating important information in a timely manner. As the company has grown over time, the pin up board for staff communication and general news and events is getting harder and harder to maintain. In addition to this, the information is only seen by staff that enter the lunch room.
The trainers also often complain about the limited storage capacity of the current Windows 2008 file server and have been requesting their own area for storage which they can access from their Windows 10 PCs but funds are very limited to upgrade the existing server. The size of the organisation is small consisting of approximately 50 staff that are separated in the following four groups:
• Administration
• ICT Support
• Managers
• Trainers

You set up a meeting with the ICT manager (your lecturer will need to act like an ICT manager) and attend a meeting with the ICT manager. In this meeting, specific details will need to be recorded by you to further identify what the ICT manager’s requirements are in the new proposed system.
NOTE: Meeting time, date, and location will need to be recorded and included in the Assignment.
You suggest some scenarios to Albion, at this point you have enough information to determine the following requirements:
• The organization has only $3000.00 to spend
• A thorough check of data security requirements
• Data migration from Windows server needs to take place (data, user, shares, mapped drive, etc)
• The organization would benefit from an internal email system
• The organization would benefit from an internal intranet news page
• The trainers need a new file share that they can access from their current PCs
• The ICT Support department would benefit from either a Samba share service or FTP service
• Policies/procedures need to be developed for acceptable use, data backup and monitoring of the new server.
• The organization requires a backup system
• The organization requires a security system

You agree with Albion’s ICT Manager that Geeks4PC will develop a solution and document the design for his approval. The ICT Manager has high expectations that the quality and completeness of your design won’t let him down.

Part A - Meeting client’s requirements
You need to write a report to state your solution for the proposed system requirements.
You will need to include:
1. Information about the organization and the problem that it has presented to you in the meeting you have organized with JHIT’s ICT Manager (your lecturer). This needs to include a diagram of possible network topology and how the network will be set out once completed.
2. Review an existing security plan to determine appropriate encryption methods and discuss to implement a range of encryption technologies with all the documentation required and cost involved.
3. Alignment of proposed server capabilities with the client’s requirements. Create a checklist of services to be installed in the proposed server as per client requirements. You will also need to specify how you will be testing the intranet’s network services to make sure they work properly consistently. E.g. Test DNS services with bind-tools. This also needs to include data migration.
4. A list of personnel required for the installation of the proposed server, e.g. IT Technician, Electrician to test and install power outlets etc. The $3k budget needs to be considered when documenting this.
5. Confirm details with the client and the ICT manager to send you a confirmation email.
6. Research WH&S requirements for server installation on premises and develop a WH&S checklist you need to consider in relation to WHS&S whilst on client’s premises to install the proposed server. i. Include possible risks management, E.g. Likelihood of a hazard occurring while server installation takes place.
ii. Include possible hazards you may encounter while server installation takes place. E.g. Electrical dangers due to poor housekeeping by Albion training.
iii. Include recommendations that you may discover to the ICT manager of Albion Training.
7. In your report you should include how you going to clean and restore on-premises work area. For this, you will need to assume the following: a) You have received the server hardware in boxes. Where will dispose of boxes? Where will all plastic be dispose?
b) You will be creating your own ethernet cables. Where will dispose of old unused cables? How will you clean up area full of cable off-cuts?
c) You will be disposing of old hardware as part of your service. E.g. dispose of old CRT monitors etc.
d) What will you do with any additional or spare equipment?
8. Get signed off by Client (Your lecturer can sign this off upon marking it)
