Assessment task description
For this task you are required to work with a client to review and test their current technical environment and then to test the Ethernet optical transmissions following a system improvement.
Assessment task introduction
The project includes two main sections: Procedure and Specifications. You are required to understand the difference between these sections:
Procedure - this section describes all the requirements that are needed to be submitted step by step. You DO NOT need to answer in this part.
Specifications - this section specifies what the student MUST include as part of the project. You are required to insert an object (a document) under each of the requirements. To be deemed ‘Satisfactory’ for this project, all the requirements under the Specifications need to be submitted and completed in accordance with Skills Australia Institute’s ‘Student Handbook’ (under ‘Training and Assessment’ section).

Procedure
Complete the following activities:

  • Carefully read the following scenario
  • You will complete this activity within your RTO. Assume that you are a network technologist employed by an ISP, OptikCom, in your city. A major customer has sent in a complaint about the performance of the service that they are receiving from OptikCom at their branch office in your city.
  • The client is receiving an NBN50 package through GPON (see figure below for NBN packages). and they are connected to splitter number 60 as shown on the topology diagram. The internal network setup at the client's offices is as follows:
  • They have a router connected to the NBN network and a L3 (layer 3) switch connected to the router. They have no VLANs set up on the switch and there are 24 laptops connected to the switch as part of their LAN. Your supervisor requires a full report which will be used to optimize the ISP's network and the client network.
  • Before commencing this assessment, you are to review the WHS Policy and Procedures provided to you. During this assessment, you will always be required to follow these requirements and your assessor will ask you questions and watch you perform activities to demonstrate your understanding.

  • You will need to access the following files to complete this assessment
  • System Report Template Test Planning Report Template JSA
  • s
  • s
  • s
  • GPON Topology diagram Client Network topology WHS Policy and Procedures
  •
  • s
  • Network Audit Report Access to legislation, codes, and standards such as at:
  •
  • Confirm the technical environment and network components.
  • Review the worksite set up for this task.
  • Analyse the given network topology. From your analysis identify suitable tests that can be conducted, a test tool that can be used and two (2) test performance parameters for each type of test for the following tests:
  • The type of SFPs and firmware installed on the switches
  • Power levels being transmitted by the multiplexer
  • Wavelengths being transmitted by the multiplexer
  • Testing of different patch cords to ensure that they are functional and usable
  • The information on the audit data indicates that the network is not meeting the performance benchmarks that have been set by the regulator. The supervisor has therefore asked you to plan a test for the optical Ethernet on the provider end. You are required to prepare a testing plan based on the performance requirements identified from the audit data.
  • Your testing plan must include a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for the tests that you will conduct, so that it complies with the Work Health and Safety requirements and work practices. Complete the JSA using the JSA Template as a guide.
  • Use the Optical Ethernet Testing Plan Template and JSA Template to submit your work.
  • Test optical Ethernet link.
  • Your supervisor has asked you to select the testing the regime which you have planned and perform it. Before you commence the test, discuss and advise your assessor of your plan. Identify relevant testing tools for use for testing the system and plan what you will test. This should include testing the current performance of the system and links using relevant testing equipment. You will need to work out what to test and how to test it. Explain this to your assessor (the supervisor) as you carry out this activity. This test will be carried out using the live equipment in the Telecommunications Lab.
  • During the discussion, you are required to demonstrate effective communication skills including:
  • Speaking clearly and concisely
  • Using non-verbal communication to assist with understanding
  • Asking questions to identify the required information
  • Responding to questions as required
  • Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding
  • Using relevant testing tools, conduct a test of the system. Your assessor will observe you completing the tests. Ensure you explain what you are doing as you complete this activity.
  • Document your test results in a Optical Ethernet Testing Plan Template
  • Develop a System Report.
  • Following the testing, you are to prepare a short report that includes:
  • Using the network audit data, give an analysis, and make two (2) recommendations for network optimisation:
  • o On the ISP network
  • oOn the internal client network.
  • Proposed Client network topology: Re-design the client network architecture topology that will be needed to ensure the service operates effectively and meets client needs.
