ASSESSMENT: Research Report
Part A. Literature Review
This assessment task requires you to identify an issue in contemporary early childhood education, related to one of the eight VEYLDF Practice Principles (i.e. Reflective Practice, High Expectations for Every Child, Assessment for Learning & Development, Equity & Diversity; Respectful Relationships and Responsive Engagement, Partnerships with families, Integrated Teaching and Learning Approaches, Partnerships with professionals) from the updated VEYLDF (DET 2016), and that is of interest to you. This can be the one you started thinking about for assessment 1. This assessment task provides you the opportunity to gain knowledge of nature and methods for conducting research, issues associated with conducting research in a range of contexts, how research can improve teaching and learning, and how research is a part of teachers’ everyday work. This assessment task also provides you with the opportunity to review a range of peer-reviewed research papers and literature on a chosen issue, analyze the issue, and organize the literature you have read and analyzed in the form of a matrix.
The matrix you completed in class provides you with a mental map of what you are reading and for you to identify the major debates and concepts within your chosen issue/topic. You are conducting library research and the literature matrix helps you to organize and synthesize the data you are collecting. A literature review written as an essay should be developed utilizing 8 sources of research from peer-reviewed research papers. At least 6 of these articles must come from a pre-approved list of peer-reviewed early childhood and educational research journals (please see pre-approved list at the end of the assessment requirements, as students locate more relevant journals the pre-approved list will grow).
Step 1: Immersing Yourself in the Professional Literature
After determining your area of interest, within one of the eight Principles of Practice (i.e. Reflective Practice, High Expectations for every child, Assessment for Learning & Development, Equity & Diversity, Respectful Relationships and Responsive Engagement, Partnerships with families, Integrated Teaching and Learning Approaches, Partnerships with professionals) from the updated VEYLDF (DET 2016). You will need to immerse yourself in the professional literature. You should read widely about your area of interest, while also considering what this implies for early childhood practice. Step 2: Write your Literature Matrix
The literature matrix should have highlighted to you some categories or areas within your broader topic. It includes the details of eight sources.
