Assignment Task :
  1. Find your gene in the list and open it. It will usually be the first entry.
  2. You will now see the OMIM entry of your gene.
  3. From OMIN, answer the following:
  4. What is the description of your gene?
  5. What chromosome does your gene map to?
  6. What is the function of your gene? There may be multiple functions but just name the most characterised function.
  7. Are there any allelic variants? If yes, name a few and their function.
  8. Are there any animal models? If yes, describe these in a few sentences.
  9. Under “gene info” click the dropdown arrow. Click on BioGPS. This will show you expression data for your gene in various tissue/cell types. Can you find where your gene is expressed the highest and lowest expression?
  10. Go back to your OMIM entry. Under “protein” click the dropdown arrow and click on “NCBI Protein”. A new page will open, and your protein will (usually) be located as the first entry. Click on this entry and identify the number of amino acids for your protein. You might have to look carefully at the entries to pick the right one. Don’t pick variants but try and find the original sequence information.
  11. Once you have found your protein in NCBI Protein, click on “Identify Conserved Domains” under “analyze this sequence”. Describe the conserved region(s) for your protein and their function(s).
  12. Go back to your OMIM entry. Under Gene Info, click on Monarch. On the left panel are several descriptors. Click on phenotype. Are there any phenotypes associated with your gene. If so, what are they?
  13. Click on Disease (casual and correlated). What are some of the diseases associated with your gene?
  14. Click on Pathway. Are there any pathway associations? You can click on the pathway for a diagram.
