Highlights
Task:
Aim: The aim of this assignment is to apply the knowledge you have developed from material covered in weeks 1-3 of the Trimester. You will have an opportunity to discuss your understanding of how the structure and function of the four tissue types of the body interact to maintain an overall function within a specific organ/ body system. Further, you will examine how dysfunction of two of these tissue types disrupts homeostasis of that organ and/or body system. This written assignment addresses learning outcomes 1 and 2.
Instructions:
1. You will be allocated, by email, an organ/body system and will write a brief essay and address the following points.
2. Write a brief essay that contains the following components (an overall 1000 word limit, suggest approx. 500 words per section):
a. Identify how the structure of each of the four tissue types contributes to the overall function of the organ/ body system;
b. Discuss how dysfunction of two of these tissue types may alter the homeostatic mechanism/s underpinning the organ’s function/s.
Organ/ organ system:
Stomach a. Identify how the structure of each of the four tissue types contribute to an overall function for thatorgan (approx.. 500 words); The stomach is comprised of the following four tissues; epithelia, connective, nervous, and muscular. These four tissues are arranged into four discrete layers starting from the hollow lumen of the stomach and moving outward, called the; mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa (McKinley et al, 2012). The mucosal layer lines the hollow inside of the stomach and is primarily epithelial tissue. The epithelia present in the stomach are simple columnar that can excrete mucous (Klatt, 2015). Considering they are a single layer of columnar cells, their function isto secrete substances, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), bicarbonate, enzymes, and hormones that aid in the process of chemical digestion – these simple columnar cells play a minor role in absorption (Grabsch, 2019). The submucosal layer of the stomach contains mainly loose connective tissue, which means that the collagen and elastic fibres that comprise it allow for distortion so that the stomach can expand and recoil (Gartner, 2021). The connective tissue in this layer also contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nervous tissue. The nervous tissue in this layer is called the submucosal plexus and they innervate blood vessels and glands in order to change their diameter and stimulate secretions, respectively (Grabsch, 2019). The third layer of the stomach is made up of three sub-layers of muscle tissue called the muscularis externa (McKinley, O'Loughlin, & Bidle, 2012)
