Essay Writing Assignment Help
The essay is to be 8 pages double-spaced and typed using the Times New Roman or Arial 12 point font with 1 inch top, bottom, right, and left margins. It will be worth 40% of your total mark for the entire course and is due in class on November 27, 2019. This essay is intended to allow you to analyze a certain question concerning politics come to conclusions about that question. This should be done by use of a clear thesis statement followed by paragraphs supporting your argument and finishing with a closing paragraph re-affirming your thesis statement. The use of at least three quality academic secondary sources is mandatory (three is a minimum, more than three may be required to get a good mark).
A quality academic secondary source is defined as a book from a university press or a journal article from a peer-reviewed academic journal. Our textbook can be used
sparingly but does not count as one of the three academic sources. Over-relying on the textbook instead of doing your own research will be penalized. Also, do not cite my lectures in class as a source (you can cite book, journal articles, or other things that I have published, though). Students should use the APA style of citations. Information on the APA citation format and tips on writing a good essay may found at University Learning Centre’s website at www.usask.ca/ulc/writing. I have also upload a number of resources on citations and writing a good thesis statement on Black Board for you to look at. Finally, if in doubt, the department uses the “Editorial Style Guidelines” of the Canadian Journal of Political Science as its standard style guide (I have downloaded this onto PAWS for you). You are allowed to use the pronoun “I” throughout the paper.
Your grade will be determined on the following criteria (see marking grid below):
1.) Grammar and technical writing skills
2.) Organization of the essay- Is there a clear opening paragraph, thesis statement, supporting paragraphs and closing paragraph. I will look for a logical and coherent ‘flow’ to your text.
3.) Engagement with the question that you are discussing- Is it clear that you critically understand the question? Have searched out secondary sources to explore differing and complementary opinions on the question?
4.) Argument- Do you have a clear and well-stated argument depicting your analysis of the issue? Is that argument supported in the rest of the body of the essay? Is the argument coherent, logical, and reasonable?
Topics
1.) Ideologies: Discuss the ideological evolution of conservativism, liberalism, or social democracy in Canada from confederation to present times (in the case of social
democracy from the 1930s to present times). What kinds of policies have the parties ascribing to these ideologies enacted or advocated over the years? How has their ideology changed? What should be the future direction of the ideology you have chosen to examine?
2.) Institutions: Does the Canadian Prime Minister have too much power? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the current parliamentary system of Canadian government? Should Canada move towards a presidential system of government like they have in the United States?
3.) Electoral Systems: Compare Canada’s Single-Member-Plurality electoral system with other types of electoral systems used around the world. Should Canada change its electoral system? If so, what type of electoral system should it adopt?
4.) Language Politics in Canada: What are the main foundations and grievances of Québécois nationalism? Are the grievances of Québécois nationalism justified? Should reforms be made to the Canadian federation in order to satisfy the concerns of Québécois nationalists? If so, what reforms?
5.) Indigenous Peoples: How has the federal Canadian government’s policies towards First Nations people evolved during the 20th century? What are some policy directions that the federal government should take in the future?
6.) Multiculturalism and Immigration: How has the Canadian federal government’s immigration and multiculturalism policies evolved during the 20th century? Are their
changes that should be made to the structure of Canada’s immigration policy or the way that Canada welcomes newcomers?
7.) Voter behavior: Why do Canadians vote the way that they do? What explanations of “vote choice” (i.e. which party a Canadian chooses to vote for) have political scientists developed? Which is the best explanation?
