Purpose and Objectives The factory management aims at producing 45 products in a shift. They also want to avoid assembly line stoppages due to insufficient part inventory at the assembly stations. Finally, because there are physical storage space restrictions around the assembly stations, and because they do not want to store the valued-added finished parts at the ASRS too long, they want to keep the part inventories as low as possible.

Currently, they are using the semi-push system described above, where part inventory levels at the ASRS are checked at fixed time intervals before releasing part orders to the manufacturing shop. Similarly, each AGV unit waits at the ASRS for a fixed period for feeding parts to assembly stations before delivering parts to assembly stations. However, they are having problems with managing part inventories, and their primary aim is to evaluate and improve this semi-push system using simulation modeling. As a secondary aim, they are also considering switching to a pull system. If possible, they want to evaluate the pull system alternative where

(1) part orders are released to the manufacturing shop only when part inventory levels at the ASRS fall below their respective safety stock levels,

(2) an AGV unit waits at the ASRS not for a fixed period but until part inventory levels at assembly stations fall below their respective safety stock levels.
