Assignment Task:

Task Requirements

Part A: Disco Analysis

Download and use the event log ‘Incident_Management_Process.xes’ from the Blackboard site.

This log is a real event log.
The log records execution data from an incident management process at an IT Operations department in a financial institution.

The data set contains 46,616 cases and 466,737 events. Unless otherwise specified, the complete, unfiltered, original log should be used to answer each of the four questions using the Disco software.

1. Analyse and interpret the following process models generated by Disco.

a) Compare and contrast the process model that shows 100% Activities and 100% Paths with the model that shows 50% Activities and 50% Paths.

b) Investigate the number of case variants detected by the tool and explain the implications of a high number of case variants when you try to generate a
representative process model.

2. Compare process models and performance of the two groups of cases defined below, describing your observations.
Group A: Cases that were started in 2013
Group B: Cases that were started in 2014

3. Sequentially apply the following filters to the original log.
Remove all activities whose frequency in the log is less than 5000.
Remove all cases that were not completed in the month of December 2013.
Trim cases to the sequence between the ‘Assignment’ and ‘Closed’ tasks. Using the filtered event log, answer:

a) How many cases are there in the log?
b) What is their mean duration?
c) In how many cases was the task ‘Operator Update’ not performed?
d) In how many cases was ‘Status Change’ eventually followed by the ‘Caused by CI’?
e) How many cases took longer than two weeks to complete?

4. Conduct further exploration of the log using Disco and provide two process improvement recommendations (with appropriate discussion/justification supported by insights gained from analysing the process, including screenshots).

Part B: ProM
Download and use the event log ‘Reviewing.xes’ from the Blackboard site.
The events within this log describe the handling of reviews for a journal.

  1.  Each case is sent to three different reviewers.
  2.  The reviewers are invited to write a report, however, they often do not respond.
  3.  If there are insufficient review reports received, additional reviewers are invited to respond.
  4.  This process is repeated until a final (accept or reject) decision can be made.

The data set contains 10,000 cases and 154,240 events. Unless otherwise specified, the complete, unfiltered, original log should be used to answer each of the four questions using the ProM framework (all required plug-ins are available in ProM Lite).

1. Discover the underlying process model which describes the events in the log using the Alpha and Inductive Miner algorithms.

a) Provide a screenshot of each model.

b) Compare the similarities and differences between the two models.

2. Using the process models discovered by the Alpha and Inductive Miner algorithms, replay the log. For each algorithm, discuss how well the models describe the process behavior seen in the log, including discussion of the following trace fitness metrics.

a) Does the model completely fit the log?

b) If not, how many instances fit the models and how many do not?

c) What/where are the problems for the non-fitting process instances?

d) Using the process model discovered by the Inductive Miner algorithm, use the ‘Replay a

Log on Petri Net for Performance/Conformance’ plug-in to identify bottlenecks in the system. Discuss your findings and key insights.

3. Analyze the performance of the process using the Inductive Visual Miner. Discuss your observations and key findings/insights.

4. Discuss the results of and insights gained from a Dotted Chart Analysis of resource involvement.
